View Full Version : '85 SELVY 200R Build

Buster Brown

Got some work started on the SELVYS 200R project. Here's a little eye candy. The engine is going in for mock up purposes and to get a base line running engine. Then when the bikes all built I'll pull the SELVYS engine out and give it a good going through and repaint.

That is unbeleivable , now that's what I'm talking about ,very sharp! I think you will need to top it off with a white 86-87 ATC200X headlight shell. I am having these made at fullbore and they should be real nice. I think with the west coast swinger you have this will be a great match with a white shell but that's me . Are you going with the 86 250R shell ?. Keep up the good work, that is freakin sweet!

If I remember correctly the Selvy's 200R isn't sleeved down but destroked, and the cylinder is cut and rewelded.

Here is an article that explains what Selvy's does to the 200R

Wow, I guess I never realized how much controversy had surrounded the 200 class. It surprises me that more trikes with 200 kits haven't popped up considering how popular that class was.

Awesome article. Explains alot. I had a conversation with Chris Cooper about this very subject. Long story short he gave up on the 200 2 stroke class and
was qualifying for the 250 mains, on his 200, but never won because the pros like White and Hart would run just hard enough to qualify, then blow away the
rest of the 200 guys and non-factory 250 racers in the main. Never knew about the CPSC's stance on the 200 class until now, but it does not surprise me... HH

Buster Brown

D-dub, I desided to make this an '85 build. The cylinder is an '85 cast and as it works out I have more '85 NOS parts left. Haven't found an '85 CALFAB yet, so the 2" over WC swinger will have to fit the bill for now. Thanks for the kind comments guys!

Well... I've spent some time on this thing now that the dust has settled on the "crated" 250R ebay fiasco. I'm going to try to get he pipe on her tonight, and polish out another Selvy silencer. Here's some pics of the project. Thought a intake port shot might be interesting.

I can tell you that Power Pro's built Klemm Research's pipes from 83-86.
Here is an e-mail from Harry Klemm.
"Doug,
All the early "hand pounded cone" pipes were made by power Pros from 1983-1986. In 1987, the in-house pipe shop was put together, and the in-house pipes were all made from hydroformed body stampings. Both designs worked excellent, however the cost to build the hand pounded pipes was about double (the cone pipes sold for $350 in 1983). As time has played out, the early hand pounded pipes have become very valuable because of the workmanship and the light weight (they were 22 ga. steel instead of 20ga.)

Sadly I don't know of anyone with the parts from the old days .... but I have seen good condition hand-pounded cone pipes sell for $1000+ .... unbelievable to me. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the top end parts were sold off a race bike at the races .... it was our standard policy to do that at ATV races for anyone that wanted to buy the parts off one of our sponsored racers.

Respectfully, Harry Klemm Group K"

You always have the cleanest bikes, and your Halloween costume is definitely a winner.

Here are some pics of a rare set of "Factory only" rear OHTSU's I got from a member here. I'll be putting them on my #1 250 racer as a more MX bike layout. I might put the grooved cut H-trak 903 flat tracker Oats on this 200R project, or maybe some smaller NOS 902s. Have to see, though, not sure yet ???
Notice no dimples on these blanks, even on the edge nobbies. They never had dimples even when new. They look to have a layered type of manufacturing process and are a much lower profile even when they were fresh. Kinda weird. Anyone know anything else about these. I believe (if I remember correctly) an AMA protest was filed in regards to these as they were on factory only bikes. An Ohtsu prototype, planned for general production and release to the public. This never eventually happened and a protest was filed. I'll dig up an old article I saw the other day when reading and some old dirtwheels mags. The tire on the left in each picture is of the WORKS tire, sized up next to a OEM size Dunlop. These looked real bad @$$ on Marty Heart's factory ride!

Awesome job again Andy!!!!! what rear fenders are they??? can you still buy them????i want them tires :-))))

Buster Brown
11-01-2010, 03:10 PM
Hey, Pete!
The rear fenders were a total fluke. I got real lucky one day on ebay and scored them. They are like NOS, although the guy said they were used. Not a scratch! These are a later MAIER fender made in the shiny era. Got them for a song too. (enough bragging, he he). Almost positive this style fender is discontinued. Maybe a batch group buy would be a possibility??
I
should thank the cool member who sold me the rear Oats. His name is Rick, and he goes by "seadoo650". Hope he can chime in for his story of their origin. I remember Rick saying he was told they came from an old race bike and to take care of them, as they are real rare. I was so stoked to get them and he was so nice to deal with! Love the members here!
Here's several scans I found interesting. The first two are in regards to the WORKS Othsu tires, and the lower ones are of a Japanese Factory guy working with a set of WORKS rear hubs. Funny... The lower Westcoast hubs were produced VERY similar in design. (LOL)

I used to spend at least eight hours a day on ebay. This was 5-6 yrs ago when I bought and sold ATC parts. I sold the hubs for $400.00. Should've kept them...Oh well, live and learn.

I love that three wheeler and those fenders are awesome but what is the deal with those hubs that stock axle wouldnt last 5 minutes on a motocross track with those hubs. where they required to run the stock axle in the 200 class. I always ran durablue axles on my tecate and i had a pile of them bent back in the day. they must of made them for some specific reason.

Buster Brown
11-24-2010, 08:53 PM
Can't please them all??? ^^^^^^^ Team HONDA used them???
Call me foolish, but I just like to showcase some of the rarely seen parts too, even if they aren't exactly as they might be on a true typical racer's bike. AKA...NOS rear OEM axle, Westcoast hubs, NOS '85 on/off switch, Boost bottle, ect. They are just fun too look at. (my .02 cents)

Anyway it's about done with maybe a few tweaks here and there. I buttoned it up tonight and am late here for work again. So... here's a quick bunch of pics. Some of them look a little shaky, I must have been excited! (LOL)

Buster Brown

Thanks guys!
Ninja, the 250 pipe is a natural patina from new I'd guess. I've not touched that pipe with anything. The 200R pipe I coated in a high temp bronze metallic. Kinda wish I'd returned it to bare and traced the welds for an old school natural look. I could always strip it someday??
You'd laugh, (or be like "WTF") but I've yet to fire that 200. Just too many projects and family affairs. Honestly, kinda hitting me here....I've never even kicked it and tried.
I'm hoping to ride it in the our annual local fair parade next weekend in full ATC dress. BTW, is your warranty still good? (LOL) I might put fluids in it and give'er a spin tomorrow. Been long over due. Hope she'll run after this long without too many head aches. At this point it's probably foolish to reveal my silly procrastinations.... Keep your fingers crossed for me!:)

So last weekend I finally got the somewhat finished 200R out to trot. I had a bad coil installed, so a little head scratching was involved. After that was remedied it ran excellent, but leaked oil pretty good from the center case gasket. No worries though, as I plan to document it's innards with a good overhaul and exterior paint at some point. I didn't want to look foolish with a leaker dripping oil like a Harley, so I trimmed a couple baby diapers and neatly tucked them under the engine skid for the short ride. Worked real good. Only problem is I forgot to torque the rear sprocket bolts....:wondering There was only one of four left at the end of the parade route and IT was hanging half way out. I'm sure some trained onlookers saw the bolts as they exiting the sprocket hub in laughter.:D Still just a fool at heart, I guess! Thankfully, nothing derailed!
Here's a couple pictures of the slow ride. Waiting on more pics from friends & family. I'll post more if and when I get 'em.

Thanks 007 ~VVV

Very nice. I do have one question. About the boost bottle, 2 and 3 cylinder 2-stroke sleds use them to help smooth out burble at idle. I always kind of assumed it was a multi-cylinder 2-stroke thing. Im curious as to the purpose of the boost bottle on a single. Not trying to be critical, or a wiseguy in any way. Im asking in earnest...

Again, awesome trike!

atc007

Short answer ,it stores the intake charge for a slight millisecond, and gives the intake a quick,"burp" or charge. much more efficient on some engines than others.

Rob Selvy found the video I posted and made comment. Very exciting! I'll most likley be sending Rob the engine for a good going over at some point. I hope to have plenty of pictures of the work and engine progress. I'll try calling him this week to pick his brain a little. Here's the video link again if you want to read the recent comments/replies.

I see another newer member in the "SELVYS Owners Group" has a Selvy 200r as well (jks217). Very cool!
jks217 , please make a thread and/or post to share your old survivor! I'd love to hear the back story of this true vintage racer. Awesome bike! Thanks. -Andy

Thanks guys!
I tore the 200R apart this morning and pop'd the cylinder off after removing the engine. Pretty cool inside. Getting it all carefully boxed up to send to California. Rob Selvy will be personally rebuilding this motor and reproducing a matching 200R hand pounded sectional pipe for me if all goes well. Pretty thrilled to have him performing his craft and bringing this build to a new level. It might even make it to Ashtabula this summer. Can't promise, but I'm talking with rob about the trip. That would be SO fun! Anyway, some pics for anyone curious of the top end. I believe he said it uses a highly modified Yamaha piston. There was so much stuff modified I'd be forever lost trying to rebuild this myself. I'd most likely just mess it up really. Lots of knowledge with this only Rob probably understands. A HUGE thanks goes out to Rob Selvy!!! Happy New Year!

Rob Selvy has spent many many hours rebuilding this little engine over the last couple weeks at a close friend's shop in Cali. Rob is on the left.

163578

Rob's been so nice taking time for many pictures and update conversations. I'm told this particular "pregnant" style exhaust port with the "snuffleupagus" slope is extremely rare. Rob built 200R engines with different stages of modification and increased power output levels. Rob has informed me that my 200 is a very high end (1 of 5) Team SELVY, and/or Team HONDA. A "WURKS Sonic 3" 200R. Among other differences, the Sonic 3's had the entire OE exhaust port is cut off, then a billet sleeve grafted on and heavily ported. The Selvy 200R engines (seen in these 3 pictures) are typical privateer engines sold to the general public/privateer. Apparently Rob did many engines for Honda on the "down low". He never really got due credit. Rob has also assured, he NEVER had Power Pros make any pipes for him. Kenny Roberts has produced pipes for Selvys, but Rob himself too hand pounded out many of them over the years. Rob is having Kenny Roberts make me a new pipe for this build, due to Rob's long term neck injury.

163575163576163577

Here are some pictures of my crank, cylinder, & piston. Notice the difference in shape/contour of the exhaust neck on this "WURKS" cylinder.

163580163581163582163583163584163585163586163587

Here are some pics of then extensive case repair work Rob performed, due to a thrown chain and a Frankenstein weld "fix" from a previous owner (not Trace "Ninga"). The cases were warped from prior welding heat, and had been pried apart with a chisel/screwdriver tool. Rob welded a fine bead along the case gasket surfaces and then machined them true/square. He also cleaned up the previous welders work and repaired the case saver bosses to near new.

Here are some pictures of the porting clean up, head modifications, '85 CR ignition, and partial assembly. Rob welded up the head to get proper squish and to drop the spark plug down into the optimal spot. He then machined the piston dome for optimal flow and clearance. Needless to say there is a ton of work done to bring this engine back to (as Rob says) "Grand National Readiness" He is also building a custom carb and intake manifold to round out the package. Here too is a preliminary picture of the hand pounded sectional pipe progress. Ashtabula here we come! ;) THANKS Rob & Carlos !!

Yes, Rob texts the pics almost daily when he's working at Carlos's shop (BDTM). We chat a couple times a week about progress and general history. He is an abyss of knowledge. It's great cause I'm up late driving at work all night and he's 3 hrs. behind my WI time zone. I can chat it up on my head set rolling down the road til the we hours. I really enjoy picking Rob's brain about what "was" or "is". Like, boost bottles?, Turbo cranks?, What powered the factory Team Honda 200Rs???
Not to start a war, but unprovoked when I asked about the Team Honda 200Rs, Rob said "MTX200 engines". According to Rob, SELVYS Performance built many engines for Team Honda without the publicity like Paul Turner. Some of Rob's Sonic 3 engines were sent to Japan and never seen again. Until the '87 & '88 Rs came out anyway. Rob said he could see many similarities found in his previous work.... Only a top Team Honda mechanic was honorable enough in copping to the similarities and lack of public acknowledgment. It sounds like there was some inherit politics when dealing with the factory Teams.
The engine build details are endless and at times are way over my head. I only wish I could hang over his shoulder and be mentored in person. I've never met a nicer more willing to share "the passion", kind of guy! Well, I haven't actually met him yet. Hope to hang with Rob at Ashtabula. Rob's graciously invited me to pit with him and the crew. Can't wait!

I'm sure he'd love to help you with any project, especially a vintage one!

Good morning Buster, what does BDTM stand for?

Good morning Buster, what does BDTM stand for?

BDTM is BDT Motorsports aka Bad Dog Toys Motorsports. I have known and worked with Rob Selvy since 1985, we are very good friends, and now BDTM has brought Rob into the BDTM fold. Rob and I, along with the very talented crew at BDTM are working on Kawi 200CC, 250CC and Open engines, carbs and pipes as well as Honda 200R, 250R and Open CC engines. Most of these are destined for Ashtabula 2013 to be riding by a few Pro riders, some are For Sale as limited NOS Selvy WURKS engines like we did back in the day.

Kenny Roberts (KR Pipes), the man himself, the Hand Cone master pipe builder is also part of BDTM, and will be making all the WURKS Sonic3 Hand Coned pipes (BDTM exclusively) for the ATC200CC, 250CC and Open WURKS engines for both the ATC & TRX line. The BDTM-Sonic Selvy Pipes will all be Hand Made, hand rolled and Fusion Welded WURKS pipes made by Kenny, Rob and myself (FYI...Kenny made all the Sonic3 WURKS pipes back in the day at Selvy Performance).

The BDTM-Selvy crew has been hard at work on Andy's 200R, Rob (the man, legend, ect...)has been overseeing and fine tuning the 200R build, along with Chris (our Honda Mechanic), and our master Tool Maker Carlos Sr. This will be one fast and authentic Selvy WURKS Honda 200R...I just buy the beer:p

J4,
Yes ,Rob/Kenny will be building pipes for many two stroke applications upon order. I know they will be doing ATC & TRX 250Rs in the very near future. I think all pipes will be by request order as each is about 40 hours or labor, but please check with them at their shop for sure.

strobert,
No I'm not 100% sure about racing it...?? I'll bring it to the event regardless to pit (display) with the BDTM/SELVY crew. I'm hoping one of the former Selvy racers like #63 Freddie Conover will be in attendance and give it a spin for us to watch. I'm no racer, and wouldn't do it nor Rob justice. I'm just a wanta be!

EDIT: Unfortunately, due to my wife having a major surgery, I won't be attending the Ashtabula event. Maybe another year....

Rob called today with the sound of a very healthy running 200R in the background! :beer

Here's some photos he's sent over the last week or so. The carb is highly modified and took around 4 hours of machining (WURKS Sonic 37.75mm) The pipe is also completed. Here are a couple happy builders.... and I can imagine why. The whole package is breathtaking if I may say so. Needless to say the rolling chassis is now the weaker link on finish quality. I can't wait! Thanks Rob, Kenny, & crew!

I gotta tell ya, I just sent in some work to Carlos. Sent him my counterbalancer and waterpump and bought a few odds and ends. This guy is a class act. He talked with me for an hour one night and it was very late for him. They are backed up 8 weeks getting ready for Ashtabula, plus working on customers bikes and he still worked me in and had my work done in 1 day. I will be doing all of my business with BDT from here on out. Their quality is first class and their services is impeccable. I certainly hope BDTM is around for the long haul as they have a customer for life with me.

I took me nearly 2 years to button up this 200R since getting the engine back from Rob Selvy & BDT. Here's a few pictures with all the updated changes. The only thing I might change still is the rear swingarm. I found another Paul Turner -1" that might get swapped.
