there is a really nice 84 R near me and I am considering buying it. Problem is .. 1) I know nothing about them. 2) All I have ever owned are the 85 and 86 's. I know they are 2 different animals and I don't want the bike to be as fast as the 85-86. But are they nice fun bikes to ride, or just built for racing like thier younger brothers?
all input welcome!
Thanks

Personaly I like the way the Air cooled look, Looks old and antique ;) But I for sure dont think The are as fast as the 85-86, Allthough Ive heard you can make em prety quick. I call them the Dino R

i don't want it as fast as the water coolers. just fun and useful. do they have any torque or do they wind up and hit like the water coolers

In my experience, they are fantastic for trails and daily cruising because they have the hit of a good 2-stroke 250 when you want/need it but they are more mild and controllable for the most part. They also seem to have more low end grunt from the motor before you need the pipe so you can putt around and cruise like a 4-stroke.

Take a peak at mine i love this trike took me yrs to build it! Custom exhaust wiesco racing piston and rings carbon fiber reeds and shes quik pulls super hard and they sound rad as hell if u get one u will love it! just make shur jetting is on take time and make shur its tuned in well otherwise thats realy the only real frustration ive had is jetting mine once its tuned right it starts first kick all day long and has not fould a plug sense i re jetted it. I love woods riding on mine!

I think you would be happy with an 84 no offense to anyone but the 81 are ugly thats the only year i dont like

I personally like the look of the pumpers. They just look meaner to me, and more nast to ride :naughty:

Another plus side of the air cooled R's is that they are easier to work on, and have less parts to go wrong - no water cooling system or radiators. The suspension is suprisingly good on the 83-84 R's, and you can really huck some air if you want to. I like them more in a way, because they are different. Everyone and their mom has a liquid R, but the old air foolers are really old school cool. The motors can swap from 81-84 for the most part, so theres another plus. 84 is the best year air cooled R to get in overall design. Better grab it if the price is right!

I like the 83-4, but still love my 85. The suspension on my 83 is shot.
My 83 is better for snow/ice.

i love my 85, but i wouldnt hesitate to pick up and old Air Hammer......i tried to pic one up recently on Craigslist. it was pretty beat and needed a good home, but the guy wanted waaaaayyy to much for it.....it was a 300$ machine at best and he wanted to trade higher dollar stuff for it......i actually kinda WANT to find an 83 or 84 to fgix up....

I owned a few air cooled R's when i was younger and loved them. IMO they are much more reliable.

the 84 is an animal in its own right..air cooled but still snotty..Not as much of an animal as the 85-86 but it's still FAST
