i am in the prosses of this right now, with a 83. You have to take in a couple factors: they dont make a aftermarket boot for us airfoolers for a bigger carb. your only option is a v'force set up that uses a hose type boot. For me w/o a big bore or heavy porting i thought stay within a 30 to 35 mm range, to fit the stock boot. i went with the 86 carb, the pj 34 because i am going to ride out on the dunes. The pe 34 off the 85 is good for trail ridding, i hear. Another option is the pwk's but they are hard to find in 30 to 35mm range, they are spendy. I did the research on micro fishe (sp?) and found the out side diameter of the different carbs and the inside d of the stock boot and found that; 34mm is stock for boot inside-d and outside d of pe30, 37mm is outside of pj34, pe34 i think is 36mm. and the pwk's are like 39mm and 41mm. This all started cuz i got a 38mm airstiker, that is a TIGHT fit, go to jail for doin that.
The pj34 works find and a beer bottle and a bar clamp works well to streach the neck out a little, put the boot in warm water first.
