Hi everyone I am new here I signed up today because you guys are the best with anything with 3 wheels.
I have a 85' 250es and the kick starter never engages. All the teeth are perfect on the gears but when i kick it down the clutch thing spins counter clockwise and the only way i feel and hear the piston move is when I turn the clutch clockwise. I never took off the clutch only took the kick start out and inspected the gears and put it in the way the service manual told me. Any help will be extremely appreciated.

Thank you,
Craig

Try the electric start!.... Sounds like either the oneway bearing was installed backward (has it been apart recently?) or the bearing is shot...

The kicker uses a one way clutch in the centrifugal clutch, if it slips it's junk or backwards; You'd see form-a-gasket or crap showing it was apart.

The other one way clutch runs the starter side (behind the flywheel), it turns over and grabs, then freewheels when running.

Where is your starter??

Where would that bearing be, no I never dissasembled the whole engine only the top end and the kickstarter worked when it was put back together. I decided to mess with it one day cuz it would only engage like 1 out of 10 times. So i decied to take the kickstarter out inspected the gears and spring and put it back in, i never took apart the kickstarter or the clutch so this is why im so confused haha.

Thank you for your help

My starter died a while back, I bought a new one and it should be here next week. I want to solve this problem rather then ignore it because I love this stupid thing and im just so curious about that kickstart problem.

The one way bearing... But if you havent had it apart, and it works once in awhile, I would say it is bad... And I quote Dirtcrasher "The kicker uses a one way clutch in the centrifugal clutch, if it slips it's junk"

And I gotta say, this man knows his ES/SX motors.... Do you have a manual for your trike?

Do you think it is just the bearing or the clutch shoes or both lol. I have no money after buying tht starter and i got a 1988 Trans Am GTA that im rebuilding and need to save money for that.
But I just thought I did somthing wrong im glad I didnt and it was my 2nd guess the bad clutch cuz it is 25 years old and thts alot of kickstarting lol.

Thank you very much, you helped alot my friend. :)
