So I had a 1000 sport bike motor and a busted up 350x frame. Only seemed reasonable to combine them. Turned out to be a pretty fun little trike. Check it out.

It handles pretty good considering what it is. It's not the prime rig for jumping but its perfect for cruising the long, straight, flat trails around where I live. So far its only been up to about 80 mph but that was only 2nd gear so I think there is more left in it. :)

is that a newer GSXR1000 motor, as in roughly 160HP , stock? in the bike, that thing will do around 175-180 MPH given a long enough straightaway. I bet the three wheeler , with its crappy aerodynamics, could do 150 in a long straightaway....that would be nuts on a 3 wheeler

Someone from Michigan used a XR or XL 650 who is on 3ww. But the 1000X is still bigger. Salt flats? Just wait until some lakes freeze nice and smooth.
That is an awesome build. How much does it weigh? Looks like the geometry is still pretty much stock? That has to be a blast to ride.

I will try and answer some of your questions.....
The motor is an 05 GSXR fuel injected at mid 160 hp. Definitely run out of balls before running out of power. I have a pile of pictures from fabrication and assembly. I will look for a way to post a gallery somewhere. I will also look at getting some video at some point. The trike has only been fully assembled for a couple of weeks so I haven't had a chance for beating on it too badly yet. The frame is about 3 inches longer than stock but otherwise I tried to maintain the stock geometry.

The speedo is a little bit high according to the gps. I will be correcting that shortly. When the video showed a short stretch over a hundred that was all tire spin, probably was around 70 actual speed. The video didn't do a good job showing how sideways it was with that much tire spin.

I took the 1000x out yesterday for a short spin with the GPS in an attempt to get the speedometer calibrated but not too far into it I ran out of gas. I couldn't get a hold of anyone to rescue me so I made the 4 mile walk of shame back home. I took the YFZ450 quad and a gas can back to the 1000x and got it going but then I was faced with the problem of two wheelers and one operator. I ended up with the front bumper of the quad strapped to the rear grab bar of the trike and off I went with my train. Got some strange looks from a couple of joggers but it worked. Turns out the 1000x gets about 30 mpg, how does that compare to a stock ride?

I recently sold my quad (square) and used the funds to add an extended Durablue axle to the 1000x. A new plasma and welding hood also seemed appropriate additions to the garage. The most important improvement made to the trike this summer was the adjustable throttle stop. This makes it much more drivable on a casual cruise. I recently took the trike to the NHRA drag strip in Brainerd MN and used it as my pit cruising rig. The throttle stop was key for making this possible. Upcoming projects for the fall/winter include an extended swingarm arm and wheelie bar for drag racing. After some searching I see some info on swingarms but not much on wheelie bars. Any advice?

Redlunn
11-19-2010, 08:02 PM
Nope, no front brakes at this time. Due to the new motor being slightly wider than stock I had to remove the rear brake pedal and instead run the rear brakes off of the right side handle bar lever. It works fine but when I have some time and ambition I will figure out how to get the rear brake back on the foot peg, reinstall the front brakes, and then the true burnouts can begin.

I haven't made much progress on the 1000 this winter due to my CNC plasma project taking up most of my garage time.
http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?121896-CNC-Plasma
Now that it is mostly completed I have started thinking what parts I can cut out for the 1000x. I remember a while ago that someone suggested a custom guard for the oil cooler that hangs out right behind the front tire. This is what I have come up with so far. Sadly, I am not an artist so any suggestions are more than welcome....

The 1000 has always been a little vulnerable under the motor with the exhaust and oil pan hanging below everything. There has been no damage so far but I have stayed on the nice smooth trails and that's about to change. I figured it was time to add a little protection. It might be a little heavy but that's OK if it helps keep the front tire on the ground. Its not complete yet but I think it will do the job.

The number 11 you mentioned turned into an "X" after 2 passes. The wife was not impressed. I do have a pair of 'almost' slick flat track tires that are just waiting for a drag race but unfortunately there are no local tracks that run rigs like this so I am stuck on the dirt for now. The event wasn't very well organized and the guy that was supposed to take care of classes never showed up so we just lined up however we wanted and ran as many times as we could. So, there was no winner but I thought it worked out better because we got to make a lot more passes this way. Also there was no entry fee. As far as competition, there was one quad with a rotax snowmobile motor that beat me. I did manage to run him down the next time though. My wife didn't get a good video of that pass but I did get it from one of my buddies at work today. The 1000 was heading for the grandstand near the end but I managed to salvage the run.

As long as the 1000X has been in existence it has had a rear brake only and that was operated by the right side handlebar control. This was a required because the slightly oversized engine left no room for the stock foot brake mechanism. This arrangement was fine for trail riding but after a few close calls with the woods at the end of the drag strip I decided something had to be done.... and I was looking for a garage project and excuse to drink beer. This project required some redneck engineered brackets, brake pedal arm, and master cylinder mount. It is currently in the testing and refining stage but it looks promising and having the front brake back makes a huge difference with this pig.

"slightly oversized engine" I think that might be an understatement...
I still need to stop by sometime and check that thing out.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Its getting a little cold up here in WI to take the X out on the trails but I have ambitions of taking it out on the ice this winter. Not sure how to stud for that much power but I'm willing to give it a try. I've been reading through some tire studding threads on the forum but more research is needed. If anyone has advice, I'm all ears.
Oscarmayer,
Feel free to PM with the specs of the gussets you would like cut. I suspect that it would more cost effective to purchase a pre-made gusset kit because the design time of getting it into CAD isn't quick but I would be willing to take a look if you want to send me the info.

Apparently the wife has decided to get rid of me (no surprise) and her chosen way to accomplish this was to get me a Go Pro HD helmet cam and let me finish off myself. Along with this came a 2 step MSD rev limiter for the 1000X that will let me launch at a more consistent RPM. The stock rev limiter at 13500 will still work but this adjustable limiter will cut out whenever the clutch is pulled in. Then when the clutch is released all hell breaks loose. I don't yet have a clutch switch so I was playing with it using a pushbutton for the clutch switch. The video is pretty much useless but I wanted to test the helmet cam and the rev limiter set at 4k so this is all we get until spring time (or studded tires maybe).

Finally got the new Go Pro camera out on the trails. It was a little cold for too much craziness but I managed to make a few runs before freezing. I have often wondered what exactly is going on with the chain and swing arm so a camera mounted behind the foot peg answered that question.

I don't know who or what TF is, so probably not. A future triker is set to arrive at my household in the next few weeks so my summer will probably be busy with that.

OK, I have heard of Trikefest but I have never been involved. May have to look into it. I know a few trikers around here that would probably like to get in on something like that too.

The 1000 hasn't seen much use this summer but we did make it to the county fair drag races today. Ran pretty decent. I left it in 1st gear for the entire 300ft and that seemed to work well. I was just hitting rev limiter for the last 30ft or so. Top speed was 75.4 mph.
