You don't need to do much with a Big Red to make it get places. The '84 is a great year since it had the high low range. That's plenty of gearing to turn the tires. With an aggressive 25'' tire it won't have much trouble getting through wooded trails and marsh. I rode a friends '84 Big Red with wooly buggers back from Caribou Lake one trip. Sure, there's not much suspension and it's only a 200cc, but on the trails and marsh it would go as fast as the terrain would allow. I was riding fairly aggressive too! I would be confident to take that machine anywhere around the Homer area. In near stock form (with aggressive tires) it won't have trouble on the local trails, beaches or marshes. It's a go anywhere machine.
If you're looking to go fast; keep your eyes open for a 200x, 350x or even a 250R. Even in Homer they are floating around. Save the Big Red for camping trips or times when you need to haul gear or hunt. The problem with the Homer area is that there isn't a place to sustain a top speed anywhere. Even the head of Kachemak Bay has too many creeks, washes and soft spots to slow down for. Of course a fast machine would still be loads of fun!

What on the frame needs to be welded? I get back to Homer occasionally and might have to time for a quick repair.

You need a new frame. Sure, a fabricator could bend new tubes and weld them in, but there's no way to ensure that it will be true. It would cost far more than another frame too. If the frame is tweaked then bolting back in the engine and all other parts could prove to be very difficult. I'll keep my eyes open for a frame and let you know if I find anything. If you have a good parts stash you might be better off buying a beat '84 Big Red to fix up.
2 of everything? If you have a spare engine and harness('84 200es only) that runs, I could use one of those.

yes you may want to make it reliable and rideable first, jesus christ! what a pos
I have 85 200M forks on my 84 200ES, I took the whole front end, all of it was a direct bolt on besides the wires for the keyed ignition. There are wire color differences. Im pretty sure i had it sorted out but i havent gotten around to taking it all apart again and swapping it all over to see if it works or not. I have a thread with pics and all if you search. Everything else bolts up direct. Hope that helps, although your better off finding another frame, or perhaps parting what you have to fund a new machine?

What happened to that frame? Sitting in wet grass for a few years?

what happened to the frame is its a homer ak bike and every big red ive seen was like this. besides the frame all the other stuff is good i guess thats what happens to big reds here sience were right on the ocean but i did cut all of the rot off so theres good metal to weld on
