hey all
im just in the process in bring back to life my old trusted big red!!!
now iv all ways kick started the beast as the starter motor has the bushes taken from it by
old owner

Now this morning i took the reduction gear cover off to have a look, and looks as it should, Just one thing that may need attention is the starter gear, it looks like its splind at the end of it......
I mean it looks like half of its good and half of its slind..

so has the starter been spinning on the reduction gears to cause it the wear down?? its like rounded half of the starter gear!!!

One other thing!!!!! reduction gear or idle gear?????

why does the starter motor have to engage the two reduction gears?? there is a bigger and smaller gear on the same idle arm!

The reduction gears are permanently engaged with the starter, disengagement from the engine happens further down the system.
Any broken teeth in the starter/ reduction gears are a symptom of a faulty sprag clutch. The missing bits could be in the sump, ready to attach themselves to the stator or rotor.
When you say the half the spline is missing, I'm guessing you mean the splines near the starter are good, and the end of the shaft is smooth. This is because the end of the shaft is supported in a brass bush in the casing. Some don't have that so if you replace the starter motor be sure to get the correct one.
