It's time to get working on the wife's Tecate. It will be primarily pink and white with white Maier plastics. The wife wants a light and she needs a good light so I have been looking for an old school Cibie Oscar setup. I bought one off Ebay that was supposed to fit a Tecate but didn't. It did have a working Cibie Oscar light though. I finally found a NOS Tecate Cibie Oscar headlight mount on Ebay, thanks to Generation Cycle who go above and beyond to make their buyers happy. Thanks again for the measurements, guys. I was curious to see if it would really fit. Well, it does. Looks awesome in fact.

This will primarily be an Old School build, as much as possible. I found an auction on Ebay for an 85 Tecate cylinder. In the pictures it is engraved by JP Racing on the jug. He said he didn't know much about it. Money has been tight but the wife wanted it. The cylinder has a sleeve in it with a fresh hone at the stock size. The cylinder has been ported, and the head looks to have been rechambered. The cylinder has a serial number etched under the intake. Another sweet snag. This will go in the Tecate with Boyesen reeds and a 38mm Mikuni flat slide and a Coffman's pipe. I'm looking for a Coffman's silencer.

Something else I have been thinking about is putting a longer swinger on it. I have a +2 DuraBlue for it but would like to get a longer swinger. The ultimate would be a CalFab. Most of the ones I see around are for the 86-87 Tecate. The dogbone mount is offset on the 86-87 and centered on the 84-85. I know you need to remedy this. My question is can you use the upper cantilever shock mount from an 86-87 in the frame of a 84-85 to solve this dilemma. I also need to find a thumb throttle that will work with the cable for the flat slide Mikuni. Thinking about going for one of the polished aftermarket Banshee ones if it will work.

Here is a pic of the carb and Coffman's pipe. The pipe will either get chromed or will be Jet Hot coated.

Some pink parts from the ever helpful jeswinehart Thanks again, John.

We are still deciding about paint vs powdercoat. We have been quoted $300 to paint the frame, triple trees, fork lowers, swingarm, and all of the little bits. This would be paint and clear. We would have to find someone to sandblast the parts. Does this seem reasonable? What would be the positives and negatives for paint or powdercoat? The Tecate will be ridden around our property or at the dunes.

We will be using an old school chrome six pack rack on the rear with a yfz clear tailight. Seat done by the Moshes in pink and white. Haven't figured out foam yet. Here is our choice of seats to use.

The one on the left was trimmed way down and cut back away from the tank, and was presumably on a flat tracker.

I also want to figure out some wider footpegs with a kickup on the ends. If anyone has some ideas for those please let me know.

I also need to get a hold of DC Plastics about sending them my UFO airbox so they can start making repops, hopefully. I'm going to need one for this Tecate.

I am partial to enamel paint myself. If it gets chipped, it is very easy to touch up unlike a chip from powder coating.
Powder coating is tuffer but certainly adds to the bottom line cost, and like i said there is the touch up factor IMO.
All my builds have paint holding up but I probably "over" prep by most standards. Fixing to do up another my self.
I am really glad to you started a build thread on this Doug, going to be nice to follow along as you move forward on it.

I assure you I do have an awesome wife. Before I met her she had a banshee so yeah, she knows how to roll.. She loves her 200X, but she can't keep up with me on my Tecate. Her only must have is a thumb throttle. We still haven't worked out that bug yet, but I'm sure it is doable.

woa banshee chick ! she got a sister ? lol im a twister myself but im gonna keep the thumb throttle on the new quad but it probably wont be long till i put a twist throttle on . for me using a thumb throttle would prob be like using my big toe to throttle unaturaL! but i still want to give it a go

I agree after running my Tecate for 20 some years with a twist throttle, getting on the 200X with the thumb throttle feels unnatural to me. She won't ride mine because of the twist throttle but mine isn't going anywhere. She crashed a dirtbike and broke her collarbone as a kid. She won't do twist throttles.

I am running a T-4 thumb throttle on my 84 half breed (all years of parts on mine). I don't recall having to do any thing weird about using one of these, just hook it up and bolt it on.
I will keep a eye out for a better deal on one for you although off road innovations has been known to wheel and deal,,, good fella on another Kawi site I have good dealings with.

Awesome.. Thanks John, that is what I think we will be going with. We'll probably paint it pink though.. Thank you for the paint info as well. I have to say I haven't seen the wife this excited about something in a long time. I hate overthinking things tho.. thinking about pink with a little metal flake. Will the madness ever end? I also have to find a place to hide the light switch. I'll use a ProArmor tether kill switch for the ignition switch. It was in pieces in the garage until she woke me up one morning and said let's put my Tecate together. I said okeedokee.. :-) She just wanted to see what it would look like.

Great job dcreel. Good man for taking care of the family. You've been patient rounding up parts, now your wife deserves a Tecate. I use engine enamel alot, takes a week to dry but is pretty durable and touches up easy. And its accessable and inexpensive. Another plus is it goes on smooth as glass and looks like a professional did it, just a thought, test it on some hubs or something.

I wonder how possible it would be to get pink enamel though?

They have it in most autoparts stores. Duplicolor. I checked on it for my daughters 200x frame. Engine enamel, so it takes about 5-7 days to safely harden. Can even use a clear coat, looks like glass.

If you dont want to powdercoat, I would do a base-coat/clear-coat automotive paint to all the parts you wanted pink.

Had another part on Ebay we needed for the build, and I wanted to make sure it would work before I bought it. I sent the seller a question to measure the distance between 2 bolt holes. The answer I got back was "no measurements, sorry" WTF is wrong with people??? Apparently the 5 minutes it would take to measure this is too much to ask for a sale.

I just wanted to say thanks again to Generation Cycles on Ebay for giving me the measurements I asked for on another 6 pack rack for the build by e-mail, and calling to make sure I got the measurements. Amazing customer service.. Thanks to Generation Cycle for the help with the build.

2005 Z400 for the thumb box....takes some minor fabrication with an OEM throttle cable!

John, that looks just like the one I'm looking at. It's for a Tecate 4 and I had read that they didn't go far enough rearward to clear the plastics. Does yours clear the plastic with enough clearance? They do look exactly the same though.

Here it is,
