Thought it would be a good idea to make a thread about rebuilding my family's 83 atc 185s. I have never done any extensive engine or tranny work before so this will be a major learning experience for me.
Quick backround on the rig: As satated before it's an 83 185s. My granfather bought it new to use up north for deer hunting. After he could no longer hunt it sat for many years until about 2002 when my dad aquired it so that we could all use it to bomb around my other grandparent's farm. After cleaning the carb and doing a tuneup the 3 wheeler was going once more. Fast forward to last summer. After a few years of abuse with no maitenence whatsoever I decided to do a tuneup and change the oil. Now the old honda was running better and quieter than ever. As I did a test drive I was doing a 1-2 upshift and heard a loud BANG. Something was obviously broken. The motor would idle fine but at anything above an idle you can hear what sounds like a chunk of something clunking around. My best guess is that is is a broken part of a trans. gear or a shift fork. During the time my grandfather owned it a lot of other people rode it without knowing how to shift properly and as a result it has always shifted a little hard in the lower gears for as long as I have driven it. I'm now getting around to tearing it down to find out what the problem is.
Here's where I started:

Cam sprocket removed:

Valve cover removed:

This was as far as I got today:

All the parts I saw looked very good. No scratches or anything on all the wear surfaces:
