Okay, I needed a summer project this year, because I'm going to have plenty of free time ontop of a part time job to make some cash to fund the project (partly).

So I picked up this 200X last week for 500 cash, and that included the title and registration for it, as well as a recently rebuilt engine. The fender in the rear was a bit jacked up from use, but I wasn't concerned about that, fenders don't really cost a whole lot (well, I guess it depends on your point of view..). The engine had a racing cam installed, and ported exhaust on it, so it's pretty much ready to go. It already has enough power for me, so I'm not going to touch it.

I'll be adding pics throughout the process. Going to black the entire thing out, make it nice and stealthy :p

My list of things to do:

1. Parking Brake Cable (I have one on the way, need to install it when it gets here)
2. Clean out carb (CHECK!)
3. New DG Exhaust
4. New tires (Rear: CHECK! Front: FAIL!)
5. Black fenders (anyone know where I can get black fenders?)
6. Have tank/frame/handlebars powdercoated black
7. Get swinger powdercoated black
8. New bolt/nut set (I noticed a lot of them were replaced with random length bolts that were stuck in)
9. New gasket/rubbers
10. Black headlight plastics? (anyone know where I can find some?)
11. New brake/clutch handles.
12. New killswitch/light switch assembly
13. Heavy duty chain and a heavy duty lock to lock the thing in place so nobody can steal it

Should be a lot of fun. For now, here's what she looks like (because I know this thread is useless without pics :p ):

I am predicting this will take me the entire summer to do, which will be just in time for desert season. Then all I need to do is register it and let the fun begin :D

If anyone has any of the parts I need that are in good condition, then I'd certainly appreciate it if I could buy them off of you :D :Bounce

looks lieka good start i am pretty shure maier makes black front and rear fenders for the early 200x's, healight shell dunno about. as far as parkign brake cable just block it off and get a aftermarket lever and perch thier cheap and look alot cleaner. and fyi i lock mine up with a cable and a chain cables cn be cut easily with a pair of snips btu a cahin canbe easily cut with bolt cutters so us eboth together it will take them alot longer to get the right tools to steal it.

No, there was a guy here in Crest that had it sitting in a shed. They did an engine rebuild on it, and threw it in the shed and forgot about it.

Yup, and thanks! :)

I already have the parking brake cable on the way. Need to free up the lever on the brake unit though, feels stuck.

Hmm, that can be a problem. And is there a way to have the bucket painted or would it just look bad?

Yup, it's an 84, and was in pretty good condition :)

I was talking with my buddy, and he suggested I get a swingarm skidplate. Do you think it's worth the extra trouble of getting one or do you think I'll be fine without it?

Alright, so I'm looking at getting some tires for it right now, because it needs them really badly. The ones I have on them have had repairs done to them, and they're cracking, and I'd really rather now have a tire blow out on me hauling down the road....

I'm looking at ITP tires, like the Holeshots. I like the look of the flat surface tires, and I think they would go great with the all black scheme.

http://www.motosport.com/atv/product/ITP-HOLESHOT-ATV-REAR-TIRE-20x118/?catalogId=103324&sMMY=HONDA;ATC200X;1984

Maybe even some razors if anyone has any pics with them on their trikes.

Anyone have any suggestions for the front? Don't know if the 8-11 rims were standard on the fronts or not but i'm having a hard time finding good tires for the right price for the front.

murder that thing and it will look rad ! i thought of doing a storm trooper look on mine, white plastics and black everything else but i think murdered out would be tight.

Alright guys, sorry for the triple post, but I'm in need of some help on choosing the right sprocket set. I have decided to go with a nice set of Carlisle 18" tires (18x6.50-8), and I know I'm going to lose some top speed with them, so I'd like to gear down in the rear (or gear up in the front).

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/9779/dscn7543w.jpg

Anybody have any suggestions? It's all stock as of right now. BTW, I think it has a bit too much acceleration power for my liking, so maybe going way down in rear sprocket size?

You could always ritt dye your plastics? Use the old ones for a test. You have to use like 10 packs but, it works good.

Nah, I'm going for some Black Maier fenders. The fenders it has are thrashed and not worth keeping IMO.

Dammit!
06-23-2010, 05:44 PM
I used 14/37 gearing with 18 inch tires on my old X and it worked awesome. Of course, I was only 130lbs back then. My motor had some mild mods. Slightly higher compression, nice cam, supertrapp and a K&N and that was about it.

If I ever finish my current project X I was planning to use 13/38 with 20 inch tires. Finances are looking bad enough right now that it might have to get parted out though. Sucks because I've been collecting parts for that thing for about five years.

I'm, starting to think of using 14/37 as well. But with me being a larger guy, perhaps 13/37?

Also, anyone have any ideas of what it will cost me to get the frame, tank, handlebars, and swingarm blasted/powdercoated?

when I did my ktm frame, i had them do some misc parts with it like the shock spring, motor covers and foot pegs and it ran me $250. That was at SD powder coatings right there by the in n out off of bradley, I'm sure that you know where that is. oh yeah and that was a little bit more for a 2 stage powder, black would be a lot cheaper

I think I'm just going to paint everything myself and clear coat it all, even the plastics :)

Seems like I would need to use high temp paint?

Also, I will be going down to a LMD (Local Motorcycle Dealer) to swap the tires out onto the rims. I went down to do it today, but the shop was closing as I was pulling up. I pumped the tires up to ride around a bit more but found that one of the repair jobs was leaking on a tire, so it's a need to swap the tires out :)

Alright, so after an evening of questioning, I am wondering if 18x6.5-8's will fit on the stock rims, which are 11-8's?

I built an all black 200x using plastic paint. It worked really well for the headlight, but the fenders start to chip as they flex a whole lot more. One if these days I'll tear it back down and powdercoat the whole thing. Right now its just painted though it looks pretty good. If you need any little parts I've still got my parts bike sittin here.

^Yeah, there's plenty of parts I still need, just little stuff, like a toolbox, tank air scoops, headlight bucket, control switch- all stuff I need in good condition, that don't look faded much :)

I've got air scoops and control switch. I'll have to check on the condition. I also have a seat with good foam, but the cover is junk. I think Maier makes black scoops though if you want black plastic... I painted my other set and since they are a lot more rigid than the 350x scoops it's held up fine.
