View Full Version : How to repair stripped carb bowl screw

The other day I was cleaning the carb on my ATC110, and one of the bowl screws stripped. I left it along and hoped it would hold but was not so lucky. After 15 minutes of riding the bowl was loose and fuel was leaking.

What are my options for repairing it? Do they make heli-coils or thread inserts this small? I contemplated just drilling it out and forcing in a bigger screw but I don't know how will that would work, or maybe a self tapping screw.

That sucks,
I'll assume it's the carb that is stripped and not the screw.
I would get a tap and dye set and go with the next size up. It should work without any big modifications. A self tapping screw would have similar results, however I would be concerned with the size of the hole since most of the self tappers I have seen are a course thread, and it would suck for it not to hold and have to re do it. To put a heli coil in you will go through the same process of tapping out the hole, only you would start by drilling it out to a bigger size and then putting in the thread coil, This will take up space and again I would worry about the size of the hole. Also I have not seen a helicoil under 6 mm. Since your not holding a ton of pressure, by getting a fine thread tap set and going one screw size up I think a screw will hold directly in the carb, and probably be the best permanant t solution.
No matter what what you go be sure to use a new gasket, that alone will help with the seal. As A temporary solution you you can run a long machine screw through the hole (if the carb allows) and put a nut on the other end to hold it in place just to ride for now.
Good luck

Use the same size screw just a little longer and put a nut on the top .

I've put helicoils in them, they also fit the throttle and master cylinder caps so it's nice to have......

M4 x .7 I believe. I just get the tap and helicoils, then wind them in with a teenie tiny screwdriver.

Ya have to start building up kits sooner or later...

I have had good luck with using a stainless steel machine screw of the right size to cut new threads into aluminum. Once threaded, just use the same size screw in that hole. No big deal.
