I just got home with this gem. It needs a lot of work. here is the vin #. JY31RX007GC002133. (The C in the vin looks like it could be a 0 but more so looks like a C)

If somebody could run the vin to tell me what year it is that would be great. it looks like an 86 to me but Im only going by the colors. By shifting it I sometimes think I feel 6 gears but then sometimes only 5.

Either way it will be for sale soon. Too much of a project for this cowboy. But I hate comin home empty handed.

Check the number on the engine. If it starts with 38w it is an 85 if it starts with 1RX then you have the 86 motor.

Looks 86, but as Mike says, 1RX is 86. 38W is 85. Congrats on the Z.

found a 38W. So 85 made to look 86 or someone swapped a motor in an 86 from an 85. either way something cool to pick up this afternoon.

glad you posted as i had made a deal to pick that z up at 8am tomorrow morning from the kid and had the lawnmower allready in the back of my truck. if i had drove to his house at 8am and found it was sold i would have been slightly upset.

It appears to have the larger 39mm 86 forks. Will this be parted? Or sold whole.

funny you said that because he mentioned somebody who said they were coming at 8 am tomorrow but he didnt want to wait. kid told me he had 17 calls on it today alone and that he stopped answering them because he got stiffed a bunch of times. whats funny is i just got done watching a movie and planned to go do a side job but wizzed through CL fast and saw the ad. Im suprised I hadnt seen it sooner after it was listed im usually on top of this stuff lol. fist call no answer so i left a message but called back 5 min later and he answered. I was on my way once i got off the phone. I had a rider I could have traded him but just paid cash. Looks like it hasnt been run in some time.

Also, werent 86's painted red from the factory. this looks like original red paint on frame.

I doubt its ran in years and would take some work to get it running again

hey I just realized there is a 1RX in the vin on the neck of the frame. maybe that means the bike was an 86 originally?

Just ran the vin.

its got a crack where the kickstarter bolts up on that side cover there. I got a good deal on it. you shouldnt be lookin for another tri-z lol, you already got a nice one . you sell yet or no? what did you grab that for 1150? i might be interested in it i dont have much time for bigger projects these days always workin and stuff. after just sitting on this bike I like how you feel like your in a cockpit or sumthin

That shouldnt be too bad of a fix. Im always looking for deals. Havent sold it yet, which is fine with me. I have a new front tire, new stickers, and a good rear shock coming this week for it. I only wanted an R because I hear they are a little faster.

On the frame,There should be a mounting holes for the radiator overflow bottle. They are located on the shifter side right about the shifter on the frame.Or is there a bottle mounted under the seat? 85 1/2 Tri-Z's had red fraes also. But were still consider 85 style.Just different plastics and rim color.

I see you already have it on Ebay. Does it just need too much work or was the plan all along to flip her?
