Well, its been 2 and a half months, and I now have a nice, crisp running Tecate.
Here is what I have into it and features as of now.
New Rings, gaskets, and reeds
DG race exhaust and DG silencer
Custom modded radiator guard
Renthal CR Mid Bars
Renthal Full Diamond soft grips
correct KX throttle on stock carb
New swingarm bearings and bushings
Fast trekker rear tires
Axle extended +4 or +6, not exactly sure,
Shock lowered 2 inches and set up for 200lb rider
New Tsubaki chain
It really seems slow. I guess I need to tune it more or let the rings break in. I mean its way slower than my R. Also, I thought it had a 6 speed, I only have 5.
Let me know what you guys think of how I did, Its my first full trike I have dismantled completely and remade into monster.

Looks good.. It's probably mad at you for leaving that 250R seat cover on it. :-)

Thanks man.
Well, maybe its trying to mock my 85R haha, it seems like tire size or something because the powerband is there and then some.
I need to get it reupholstered. I cant believe how much more I can slide on that, its so mch more different than the 86 T-3 I had, this one is like a flattracker.
I love it!!!

what gearing are you running? 13 42 with 18 on back?

If you're running 18's you're going to have to gear "up" from the stock gearing. Either a bigger front sprocket or a smaller rear. I actually have different sprockets that I have to run if I put my 18's on. You will not feel the power of that motor if it's geared too deep.

Looks like you put some work into that thing but there is something you should have done while it was apart- the crank seals. They are critical to the proper operation of a two stroke engine and they do wear out, especially on a 25 year old engine.

I think I am running 15/38 with my 18" tires. I'll check.

Sounds like a fun bike. Congrats on getting it all done. I wish I had mine done. The good thing with small tires is you can rip through the gears fast and hold your rpms in a lower speed. Great for a flat track or the dunes.

Nice trike. I want a tecate. I have a question since every ones talking about tire sizes. What would happen to the power delivery if you went from a 22-12.5-9 tire to a 20-10-9? I would think it would rev up a little faster but have a lower top speed.

Without changing your gearing you'd be correct.

That is exactly what would happen.

what does the T3 signify ? are all Tecates T3's or is it a 3rd gen tecate ?

T is for tecate the 3 is for 3 wheels, T4 is for Tecate 4 the quad version. There was really only 2 generations of Tecates. Although there are differences between the 84 and 85 (first gen) and even the 86-87 (2nd gen)

nice tecate , i like the 84/85 the most, my green 84 is crazy fast if your power shifting the front tire literally floats just off the ground so that you can barely steer

thanks alot for the compliments, I want my friend to ride it soon, he was the one that helped me haul it home, his help was invaluable. I was riding it before the pic, so excuse the dirt, I need to go bigger in the front, Its now tuned perfect, It just shocks me that its a 5 speed, I expected a 6. Apparently the bolt pattern is universal, I have 2 sets of Golf Cart slicks and some Turf tamers, looks like i'll be doing some burnouts on my street:D

Also Fabio, I pressure tested the crankcase, the seals were good, this motor has very little hours on it. I would have changed them, but they checked out and were still perfectly pliable yet rigid to hold pressure.

It might not be the prettiest..but it runs MINTY MINT MINT. I rode this thing today with 3wheelmecca (he was on his R) and it is a blast. Definitely have to be fast on the shifts due to the gearing, also probably the first time I've ever topped out in high gear at his place. It screams though... And we got yelled at for tearing up the driveway... trailpro:naughty:trailpro

if you need stock parts, PM me, I have a few.
I made it for function, not form or mint, I just want a trike that I can beat the hell out of, and it does not faze it. The T-3 is it.

Ok I know you guys raced so who won?

If it's "way slower" then your R. You need to gear it or there is some other mechanical problems you need to address. Maybe jetting or something. That thing should at the very least, hang with your R.

Nice trike. I love seeing more Tecates being brought back to life these last couple years.

its the gearing, I know that. I did not race Newrider, we are good friends and I need more area to do that.
The tecate actually costed less than my R. I got the R for $335 running and done, and got the tecate for $50, engine for $50, and the rest of the parts for $200. I am the bargain king, but I did the job right.

We might as well have raced, he was in front of me on a straightaway and pulling away, and I was topped out. The gearing definitely needs to go a bit higher, but I kind of enjoyed being able to ride it without feeling like I was gonna get bucked off if I pinned it.

you just got 2 things to do.
1 get a OEM seat for it
2 clean her up

2 clean her up

Do you just hang your trikes on the wall and look at them? lol
Why does this bike need to be all shiny when I'm pretty sure it's getting ridden every day?
