They keep water, grime, dirt etc from getting in/on the forks. it protects u from this junk damaging the seals when compressed. and it could keep a stick or rock from denting it by deflecting it with the boot instead....in a perfect world.

Ok, I was hoping they were only mildly important and the seal around the tubes did the majority of the work. I have been hoping to find a used set in good condition, but it looks like I will be giving the Honda shop another $66.00.

I have been running mine without the boots for over a year without issue... I just keep them clean...

They aren't original obviously, but you can buy decent boots from eBay for much less than $66. I paid $14 from eBay seller "btpage" - i just checked, and although he doesn't have any Big Red boots currently listed I would send him an email asking him... I did the same thing for my 250sx and he had boots for it (again, just not listed on eBay).

I bought Daystar brand boots at a local shop and they seem like a good quality of rubber. They had them in all colors, and for less than half of what you were quoted by Honda.

I got mine from ' emxparts " on e-bay for 9$ plus shipping. Cut about three or four of the pleats off the "BIG" end and they fit my 86 Red perfect. Tell them you want Black or they may send anything.
