I have a 1983 Yamaha 225dx, when you are riding it slow or fast it runs great. But when it sits and idles it coughs almost like it is backfiring into the carb. It will only do this a few times, until it will stall. I have completely tore the carb apart and blew every hole out plus used carb cleaner on it. All holes and jet holes are clean and clear. Anyone else every have a trike do this before? Someone point me in a direction.

if its only at idle, i would check the pilot jet again. did it just start acting up or is this a new trike for you

No, I've had it for a couple years, but I usually ride one of my other ones and this one sets alot more than it is ridden. I just had the carb off of it and the pilot jet was free of dirt and you can see through it if you hold it up to the light.

Just went down to the garage and tore the carb off of it again and completely tore it apart and blew it out again, no blocked jets or dirt anywhere. Put it back together to factory adjustments and still nothing. Rides great around the yard and doesn't miss a beat until you stop to let it idle and it won't, just pops and backfires through the carb. When you adjust the idle screw it does nothing.

good suggestion with the air leak at the intake, and check the fuel flow. the petcock has filters so check that. i was having this problem, my 85 DX ran fine when riding but idle was all over the place. i replaced the petcock ($17) and rebuilt the carb and its like a whole new machine. if you get a rebuild kit for a 92-98 yfb250 timberwolf ($15 ebay) it will have every removable part for the stock DX Carb except the float and the main jet (112.5) which i picked the jet up at my local parts store for 3.95. the main jet in the kit is #85 so way to small. you might be ok just to clean the filters on your petcock, mine had to be turned with pliers to shut off the fuel and was dirty as hell so i just got a new one. hope this helps Kirby
