Please help me out here, I found this nearby where i live. ive always wanted one, its all original hasnt been ran in five years, been in a barn guy hasnt even tried to start it, wants 500 for it! The old lady is going out of town thursday so i figured i could sneak it into the shed maybe without her knowing  what do you guys think?

If the plastics aren't cracked and the engine is free, is may be worth it. Plastics can be polished and shine again, carb rebuild, new fuel, and it may run.

back plastic in the right corner is cracked, you can kinda see the outline of the crack

Oh, I thought it was a sticker. If it's not stuck, it may still be worth it. New plastics are around $200.... if you plan a full restoration - it probably won't be worth it. But as a rider, I would say so.

MN not canada eh  I just wanted some feedback, motor isnt locked up he did say. I dont know squat about the R's is my issue, but it seems there are way more parts available for them than my X or SX sounds like I should pull the trigger on this one!

if the suspension is still solid, brakes work, rust free or fairly rust free inside tank, and kicks over with compression i would get it, also has an aftermarket silencer almost looks like a richter privateer so its gonna be loud!!!!! and thats good imo

Does this year have any particular problems? Its air cooled right? The later years are liquid cooled? Are there drawbacks to being air cooled?

I would think the liquid ones would be able to run hotter and longer, however I've also heard (May not be true) that the liquid R's produce around 40% more HP.

Also, they can use some TRX250R parts, which the air cooled ones cannot due to the sprocket being on the other side.

the only issue that really comes to mind with the air foolers is second gear is kinda weak and will give out in time, the reed cage from any 250r will work in that motor though, power wise they are a bit weaker then the water pumpers but i dont think its any where near 40% maybe 10 or 15% my air fooler with a bigger carb, newer reed cage and full exhaust will run with my water pumper with the same mods all the way up to 4th gear then the waterpumper starts to pull away faster and faster after that, real good bikes though imo, hard to beat them for what you can get them for.

pitting on the forks by the seals, and the rear shock this will eat up seals and call for rebuild not so important on forks as it is on the rear and can cause a bucking bronco due to loss of hydro fluid. not so much fun as i can recall. thats a steal grab it! smokers are super easy to rebuild

steal !! the brocheure for the 85 pumpers claims 40% more hp than the previous yr ( air cooled )

jcorkin
05-19-2010, 06:00 PM
did a little searching and the power of the water pumper at the crank is 36 and the air fooler is 25hp so roughly a 30% difference, didnt think it would be that much but the #'s dont lie

the only thing that you'd wana watch out for being an air cooled 2 stroke is running it at high revs for a long period of time. it'd run hotter than a 4 stroke.

Got the trikes! The R is stock and underneath 7yrs of barn grim is in immaculate condition other than of course the plastics :( The inside of the tank seriously looks like it just came off the line... paint on tank is rough cant believe it has the 32:1 fuel ratio sticker and warning sticker on it still! Rear bearings arent very good, rear shock either needs to be adjusted or charged ass sits low and is real soft! other than that this thing is gorgous! The 225DX is not in as good of shape as the pictures depicted... Smokes like nothing I have ever seen, gonna try some new rings and see if that takes care of the problem, the 225 DX is back burner all the way... Im a honda guy so if somebody wants it shoot me a reasonable offer and its yours! I will get some pics up after I get home from work tomorrow night, Im chompin at the bit to get on that R and rip it up!

post up a better pic of that silencer on the 250r and i will see if i can identify it for you, might be an old answer

SneakyATC250R
05-23-2010, 05:56 AM
I have certificates of origin for both an 83 R and an 85 R. The liquid cooled does have close to 40% more power as stated on my paperwork. 85 = 38.4 hp 83 = 26.7 hp I dont know about the 81, 82, 84, or 86, ive never owned them. as for the bike in question I would buy this as a rider for $350 any day!

I will post up a pic tomorrow Afternoon of the silencer, i hope you can identify it for me, got on on a 200X that I dont know what it is either so maybe you will be able to help me out with that one as well! The 250R is a decent trike so far, its my first one and its pretty fun but I guess i was expecting more power out of it. Gonna have to track down a 85-86 now I guess!
