View Full Version : Symphony Of Construction - Project "FunTen"

Just like the end of any good rebuild comes the dawning of another. I recently finished my Tri-z and prior I spent time looking for something new to build. Just so happens this sucker was local, and darn near free. I have spent to much time looking at Mike's (shortline10) builds. They have consumed my almost complete internet usage! Haha. Honestly though, it's been a definite inspiration.

Project "FunTen"

Tires look to be mint... for the round file that is.

Someone graciously removed a lot of parts and let it sit outside for a LONG time.

Exhaust header all but gone.

The only real usable piece to this puzzle.

You can have anything I find.

Why would you want to get rid of the high-lo gear box? I love mine.

honda250sx
05-19-2010, 12:30 PM
Well my goal was to turn it into a racer. The SL 90 tranny shaft allows you to do so. Racers didn't need the hi-lo gearbox.

Why would you want to get rid of the high-lo gear box? I love mine.

For me its about building things and making them new more so than riding. Although riding them is awesome too. I just like redoing just about anything. I do machine repair for a living.

Spent some time in the shop today. I had never seen this SL90 tranny shaft conversion done. Heck I didn't know how it was done or anything until Shortline posted about it. So with his posts and a couple extra pictures oh how his left side cover was cut out I set out to cut mine for my motor. Didn't turn out bad at all. I have one hole that needs to be filled in. I use a product called LABMETAL when repairing things for powdercoat. It will work perfect for this application.

I really need to get a couple of those seals. I've sort of been putzing around with modding one of my sidecovers and I need to get one of my parts engines apart so I can scam all the bits out of it I need. I've been fitting alot of bits on my trusty old nicholson frame and you guys have been motivating me to get a little more serious with this. Digging bits out of hiding. I work on too many things at one time though. But if I get stuck on one project, I just switch projects.

PAT, I can get you just about ANY spring backed dual lip, seal. I think Jeff went to the same place :naughty: Just wait until you need a bunch for everything so the shipping isn't a waste!

JEFF - I was just hoping you got those pics. I guess the odd 70 motor I had came with a kick and a pull and a clutch pivot on the front verticle?? It may be a CT7970/90?? IDK - But, I did find the complete 110 motor on my shelf and let me know when to split it. You owe me nothing....... (I thin that F*&^&^%$#@! neighbors Golden RAT took my friggen gloves you gave me!!) I loved those farkers!! I can't find the pricks and I always wore them!! The cylinder should be perfect for you.

(You know how we roll by now...) I'll have to get it all in one box for ya (Find that CDI cover).......................I'm so glad they/'ll fit your stuff!! Glad to help a brother out!

You want me to split this thing and everything? It's useless or good for trades to me, thats all. Probably bone stock. I swear I have the intake and carb too................... It may have better gears/forks/drum etc etc, all that stuff though..................? I'm sre I can help

I am,get it apart quick!! I have a crowbar, a 5lb hammer and lots of steel wedges to jam inbetween the cases  (I may as well send you those to......) along with the broken critical gasket sealing areas :D

I found a double output coil the other day. no idea of it's origin though.........

Lately, I haven't even rode much , gotta get with that program.

I also want know if that sled I found nearby based on that model/serial# could make it "ice worthy"..................Otherwise, I just don't need any more crap in the yard.

I found another maybe 1/8 thick rubber flap that says "goes under tank" it has on small slice 1/2" long but no damage to the holes that the plastic pins it goes in............

It's yours...

Dirtcrasher
06-06-2010, 11:03 PM
IDK how I F'd this up but:

Apparenttl this goes under the 110 gas tank (which is what I wrote on the tape)

Anyhow, it has a small slice but all the holes (maybe 3) are perfect and use plastic pins.

Here are the pics, maybe it's available, maybe hard to find? Who knows.............

I'm trying bud! Just tell me when to split it, the crowbar is on stand by  Of course I wouldn't do that to you Jeffro!!

Picked up a really nice stock axle with the most zinc I have seen left on a used part ever. Picked it up with the carrier dirt dirt cheap. Drilled and reamed out the stud holes in my set of used 300ex hubs so that they would accept the new wheel spacers I machined up. I may offer these spacers forsale. Not sure yet.

Since I can't seem to locate a vented dipstick for this project, I decided to fool around with one I had. It came out rather nicely. I got some 3/16 barb fittings with 10-32nd threads and threw it in the drill press. End result. I imagine they did stuff like this prior to trick goodies.

Had sometime to mess around in the shop this weekend. Got the motor torn down and the cases cleaned up and cooked out the oil so that they would not gas out during powdercoating. I also tap'd each hole so I have no snags on assembly. I also reamed out all the 10mm counterbores for the dowels as well. Prep'd each gasket surface too! Picked up a few stainless bolts from work, still need to grab the rest. I powdercoated these cases in a flat black for something different. I also installed a trick little magnetic drain plug I had kicking around.

Thanks Guys!

ROAD BLOCK!

The night started good. I scored some really nice high precision Nachi 6004 and 6204 bearings at work today. I dug out the SL90 tranny shaft I bought NOS and my gear set I had cleaned up from the original 1984 110 motor I started with. I took apart the output shaft to transfer over the gearset and discovered that the original output shaft measured 20mm OD and the SL90 shaft I have measures 18mm.

Question is...Do I have the right output shaft needed for this conversion? Or do I have the wrong SL90 shaft? Part number of the SL90 shaft was 23221-052-000.

Not sure whats going on here. Mike any idea?

Ok . I pulled some parts out and measured them for ya . First off the tranny shaft you have is correct @ 18mm , the problem I believe is the 84-85 motor have a little beefier tranny and honda bumped it up to 20mm on the 84-85 model . I measured a stock atc110 1979 model shaft and its measuring 18mm also . If your wanting to use that bottom end I think your gonna need a older model atc110 /90 tranny gears and bearings .

I pm'd on some parts

honda250sx
06-24-2010, 12:25 PM
Thanks Dan. Got your pm. Unfortunately my there is nothing wrong with my transmission. The issue is that the counter shaft from 81-85 are all 20mm shafts. The 1969 SL90 shaft is 18mm. Thus meaning that inorder to make this swap on a CDI motor you will need a counter shaft from a 79-80 110 or any 90 counter shaft and gears because they have 2nd and 3rd that are splined for an 18mm shaft.

Needless to say I bought NOS gears that I needed to make this conversion work.

Reinstating project fun ten. Been really busy with work and traveling with that. Been piling up parts here and there. Mike has been a monster help. I have been adding to his bank account lately haha. Got this PCCC front end and a Hooker Header for it. Trying to determine what Honda forks these are so that I can get some fork seals for them.

Does anyone know if these holes are supposed to be angled? The holes that the bolts go into for steering stops. The bolts that came out were stripped. I may need to weld these shut and machine new ones.

I believe the forks were from a sl or cl 350 mid 1970s model honda .
The allen head steering stops are supposed to be straight but if you dont put a washer and nut on the bottom they get bent a little . You can drill them straight and washer both sides and nut the bottom and it should be good . 83-85 200x seals work if you want to rebuild them but I dont think they were leaking .

honda250sx
03-16-2011, 11:26 PM
Thanks for responding Mike. I have the bottom tree getting welded now. I'm having a boss added on the bottom so that area is thicker and supports the bolt better. The forks are leaking for sure. Those who know me know I physically go thru everything and replacing cheap items like that is easy.

Mike I think I will polish them. Just ordered dust and oil seals for them. I have a box load of stuff to send to Greg King. I received an 81 250R front hub. Got that blasted up and started designing a brake rotor for it. Going to cut that out of stainless. I need to machine an axle and spacers for that as well as come up with a bracket and brake caliper.

I need to find a 3x100 front wheel and some rear wheels.

Got the +3 Nicholson frame all blasted up. Has to go over to a fabricator friend of mine for some steering stop work and to have the front engine mounts straightened back out. Another goody from Mike.

81 250R hub blasted up too. Got an idea for a front brake rotor. Going to draw it in CAD tonight and cut it out of stainless when my material gets here. Can't wait. Some new steering stem bearings and hub bearings.

Look at my pic very close at the back side of the cooler head mount and look at your stock one and you will see what I mean . The oil passage is filled solid on the aftermarket one were the stock one would flow oil . Basically its rerouting the oil threw the cooler .

Mike, slight issue maybe. I got a cylinder from my buddy Steve aka dirtcrasher. The top of the cylinder measures 69mm. That's the OD of the sleeve. The NOS cylinder head I have, the head only measures 65mm. Do I have a NOS 90 head instead? I have nothing to compare. Original parts are all gone. They were complete junk.

Ok I measured a few and they are all at 69mm . I remember hearing the pre73 heads are different and take a different headgasket and oil seal . I dont think you can use it on a newer cylinder mainly because of the oil seal differences .
I have a NOS 110 head if your ready to open that wallet again LOL . Teaser pic

Been a while since I have posted on this. Not much is new. Gathering parts for the motor. Bought a stroker crank from 90crazy, great guy to deal with. Not sure who made it or what the stroke is on it. Crank just got sent out to be inspected and balanced. Cylinder has been bored and honed for rocky +4 big bore piston. Working on some internal stuff for it. A lot of new guts and of course all new bearings. Had Greg King polish a bunch of stuff for it. Had to throw it together to see what it would look like. Also had him polish my PCCC triples and fork legs. Got a sweet two piece aluminum front rim and need to find some cool rears now. Frame is currently at a buddies getting the steering stop fixed and front motor brackets straightened out. Plan is to put an 81 250R front hub on this and utilize the front brake rotor with a hydraulic brake fashioned up for it. Need to machine a front axle for it and spacers as well.

Not much to report. Crank is still out being trued, balanced and gone thru. Fork tubes are at forking by frank getting the pits fixed up. Frame just finished having new steering stop put on and brackets straightened. Trying to decide to chrome the frame or powdercoat or get the frame zinc yellow chromated. The zinc yellow chromate is the gold coating thats on most of these frames. As chrome-moly cannot be anodized. Zinc yellow chromate is an anti corrosion coating used on aircraft.

Looking for an early 90/110 recoil for points motor in good shape, vented dipstick and some old school rear fiberglass fenders for those of you following this build if ya have any goodies to part with. I have a pretty close to NOS 83-85 recoil I can trade straight up if someone has a really nice recoil.

If you do go with some 90 fenders, this aluminum support plate is a cool idea. Could be polished for a real trick look. Getting a couple made for myself. Let me know if you want one.
