This is kind of a repeat question and answer fishing trip here.....I recently purchased the aforementioned machine...'86 250es...finally had a chance today to look at it a little more between thunderstorms....I was told by the previous owner that it had a "squeak" and that he thought that it was the u-joint.....well I didn't notice it the other day when I test rode it...or as I was pulling it into the shed in the poring rain when I got home....but today...I had it running in the shed....and there is some obvious bearing noise (a roar...but not a nasty roar if that makes sense)...It roars when the engine is running and in neutral or in gear....I can't seem to figure out which side the noise is on....but the noise does NOT increase in rpm or sound as I rev the engine...When I shift from forward gears into reverse, there does seem to be a slight "clunk" but again...I can't tell where it is coming from....(I need to find someone with better ears)....I thought I would post this thread to the forums and see what everyone else thought that has been into them....I am wondering if the power transfer unit that connects to the drive shaft might have bearing issues....Crank case oil was full.....I assume the engine and trans bearings all run in oil...Engine runs good and noise doesn't change with rpm or load no knocks or any other issues...starts easy........ Ok...so I've put it out there for someone that is knowledgable on these machines....... I will be jumping into my new Clymer book shortly...Thanks for any and all answers and help.
