Im putting together another big red to sell and make some money with my friend. We have more than enough parts and its coming together nicely. When I looked at the engine today, the left side cover had been cracked in the back and was covered in some kind of putty, maybe JB Weld, and was leaking oil pretty bad. Grabbed another side cover out of the parts bin.
Here's the problem.
The side cover from my parts, must have been off an 86 or other year, because the pickup wiring for the stator is completely different. Is this something that varied with models? or was it something someone rigged up. Big Red guys, help me out here, all I know is 85's :D

Don't be worry about it,both pickup coil work with the wiring harness connector and CDI,but you have to swap the whole cover with stator and pickup coil .

Thanks. So my cover from my parts is off an 86 / 87 ? I thought there were no differences besides carbs from the 85 :D

I ran into the same thing.Using an 87 motor, but wanted to keep the 85 case, due to the fact that the 87 was very rough..Same deal.I had to use an 86 case with the 87 stator in order for it to work. The one problem with the 87 is that the wires were burnt outside the case due to a fire, not the fault of the electrical system.Garage fire. Im splicing in the plug from the 85.Anyway to make a long story short.Does anyone know if it makes a difference which yellow wire gets spliced into which yellow for the alternator? The pulse generator and exciter coil were all color coded as such. The 3 yellow wires are all the same(not color coded) and I cant see which wire is which because of the wire casing inside the crankcase stator cover.I would think it would matter but I would also think that they would have color coded them different or added different colored stripes to the wires.I dont want to fry anything.Does anyone know for sure?I would really appreciate the help.
