My '82 200e Big Red is completely stripped to the frame and I plan on having a local powder coater sandblast and powder coat everything. Frame, seat pan, chain covers, front and rear racks, various brackets, ect.

Many of these parts were pretty rusty (nothing too serious though). Mosty surface rust. Should I give them any special instructions? Is there anything I should do before turning my parts over to them? I'm concerned about the rust returning.

Bonus question. Lol! I'd like to make this rig as accurate looking as possible. Should the frame be glossy, semi-flat or flat black? What color/finish should be applied to the rest of the machine? Racks, ect.

Thanks in advance.

If they sandblast all the rust off completely it shouldn't come back. I like gloss powder coat on a frame. It helps mud come off easier.

For my racks I have a shop coat them in bed liner material. Its not gonna give you a brand new OEM look, but I like the durability of it. All of my trikes ridden daily I take that into consideration for durability.

This is just my opinion though. Every one has their own opinions and results.

to powder the metal must be clean and bare, so there should be no concerns about rust. Racks come from the factory with the same paint as the frame.

Thanks for the answers guys. I'd never considered the better mud resistance/cleanability of the gloss.

I thought their gloss black was going to be far too glossy but I got my seat pan back today and it looks amazing! Just $21 for it to be sandblasted and p/coated too.

Anything that is a machined surface needs to be taped off so that no powder gets in to it... steering head bearings, threaded bosses etc. You will probably have to re-tap/chase the threads of any bosses but it is easier w/o hardened powder coat in there.
