Been thinking about this project for a while and now it's time to start putting it together . Its a 1979 atc110 motor that has a 61mm stroker and a 55mm piston . I'm gonna go threw the motor completely and also do some upgrading as I go . Sl90 tranny conversion with a cut out high/low motor cover . SL90 manual clutch conversion . I have a few front ends and not sure what I'm gonna use yet , maybe the Rutt Ryder or a PCCC kit .

Post some better pics of your frame , From the pic you have it looks like a dickson / joker frame but I need to see the back side of the frame to be sure .
Most of these parts were collected over many years but I do keep a look out for the rare stuff .

Got a chance this morning before the kids and wife woke up to tear the motor apart . Found lots of previous owner build mistakes but nothing terrible . Nice very usable 55mm pop up piston , old school PK racing cam shaft , very nicely ported head , correctly turned down oil pump shaft for stroker application , Nicely signed Helm & Son 61.5 stroker with nice and tight bearings still .

Got the center cases cleaned up and started putting it back together . Installed the sl90 tranny shaft so no more high /low set up , this also requires a special tranny seal 20 x 37 x 7 , the stock atc110 and sl90 seal doesnt work . Gonna use a NOS set allen bolts as an upgrade also . Next step is to tackle the clutch side .

Tim ,
The secrete is a soft brass brush and any type of degreaser works . I like formula 88 or for the really tuff stuff just plain old gunk .

I'm surprised you didn't pull the head studs/dowels and run a nice stone over the base gasket area before assembly? Regardless, fantastic work but "par for the course" for you SL!! :D
Whats with your comment about the oil pump being correctly turned down for a stroker? Seemed like the way you worded it that it doesn't "have" to be done but it's the right way to do it. Whats the deal on that? I'm just curious......
Is that your kid helping you out? Projects like this are certainly one way to keep kids out of trouble :beer

I guess I should have taken pics of the oil pump shaft LOL . The stroker crank causes clearance issues from the rod being so far out on the cranks turning radius which causes it to interfere with the oil pump shaft . The back side of the connecting rod sticks out farther than the crank itself thus trimming the oil pump shaft a few MM's is needed on the big strokers . I believe the 58mm and smaller strokers their is no trimming needed.
Will send you my info again .

Mike - Can you break out EXACTLY what is needed for this conversion...? I have some BUYING to do. This is what I want for my motor.
For the tranny conversion all you need is a sl90 tranny shaft + sprocket and a new custom 20x37mm shaft seal which I purchased mine from a local store called Florida bearing , all the atc tranny gears work on the sl shaft .
The sl90 clutch conversion is a 1969 sl90 complete clutch set up , you will need all the internal parts to do the conversion . You will have to cut your atc90 or 110 shifter shaft flush with the inner cover as it doesnt need the extera length for the auto setup anymore .
If you need anymore details let me know .

Had a little bump in the road . I went to hone the cylinder and it had a few to many pits so it's bored out to 56mm now . Instead of the pk cam I'm going with a #93 grind Kenny Harmon roller bearing cam which has a little more lift and alot more duration than the PK cam .

Got the motor pretty much completed just need a new set of points and polish up the cover . Going threw my recoils and found a Bandito brand one in chrome so I gave it a rebuild , it should complement the bandito frame nicely . The cut out hi/low cover went on with no problems . I purchased this custom cover from Tommy Gaian a few years ago and finally got a chance to use it .

I don't know if that axle is aftermarket or not, but it's not a Heavy Duty axle. It pretty much looks just like a stock style axle. That's alot of cake for a non Heavy Duty axle. I think I paid $45 for the last nos rear axle I picked up. A Heavy Duty aftermarket rear axle won't have the taper to it like that axle does.

Thats a Nasa axle. I recently bought a Nasa axle from that seller for my 200X project and it does have a mild tapper but it is REAL beefy. I can't speak for that axle specifically but the one for the 200X is deffinetly heavy duty.

Got the tires installed on an old set of mitchel wheels and used a set of 3 inch wheel spacers to give it that wide stance as a flat tracker . Decided to play with the front end today . Gathered up all the parts for the light and installed that and still had some time so I installed the front fender also .
The fender colors are factory 1983 Honda atc blue gelcoated in fiberglass and to match that is near impossible so I decided to just do old school blue metal flake on the tank and light and they match up pretty nicely with the fenders :D.
So Dan you now know the color

IMO when you get into such a large stroker as I did you need to vent the way I did at the head and the bottom end . If your just doing say a big bore and no stroker just vent the bottom end .
Another trick is to vent the factory dip stick with a small brass fitting .

Lots of test and tuning today and finally found the correct size jet (160). The biggest problem was a flat spot in the midrange power which I finally got rid of by changing the intake manifold to the longer style Rocky brand . Wish I new why some motors like the long manifold and some like the short ones LOL.
I have had this problem in the past were I have a Pauter motor that will only run with a short manifold . Maybe its in the porting and the style of cam shaft used ?
Maybe some of you old timers can shed some light on this for me .

Mine are stock 90cc, small brass fitting in dip stick as in type with breather on top or fitting and add clear tube?
From what I can tell both of mine are stock spec internally 2.5hp at best getting blowby seepage out the tappet cover and dipstick. So just trying to avoid blowing a gasket here.

Just vent the factory dipstick with a small brass fitting and clear tubing . Make sure the tubing is 3-4 inches higher as soon as you come out of the dipstick so the oil stays in the motor .

drill approx 1/8" hole from top of dipstick down into one of the quarter triangles on bottom, drill out and tap top side for
1/8" NPT fitting. Add fitting and hose, run hose up underneath seat out of way from crush of course and exit rear..........?????

One thing I've noticed is some of the stator side covers have vent holes in them and some don't. Once you cut out the part for the hi/lo transmission gear it sort of cuts the vent in 2. I can see where you would want to plug up the vent in the lower part of the case, but I don't really think that you would want to plug the vent in the upper part of the side cover. Worst comes to worst, you may get a little oil vapor on your rear chain.

I block off the reg side and run the fuel line off the reserve side . Install a briggs inline petcock and a clear fuel filter and connect it to the carb all out of 3/16 fuel hose .
I use 1200 degree hi heat paint on my pipes and the trick is to let it dry over night before running the motor .
The brass 90's are 3/8 and the hose is 5/16 clear fuel hose for the breather set up and really nice uv rated zip ties to hold them on .

shortline, get a video camera that has video output type that your operating system can read. JVC's flashy Everio cameras with the YouTube direct uploading option doesn't work, and it's a rather painstaking method to upload it. I'd suggest something that outputs .AVI files, which simple movie editors like iMovie or Windows Movie Maker can read. Still image cameras often output in .AVI format, but their quality is a bit lacking in the video department.
The Flip HD camcorders are great, simple to use camcorders with a built in USB jack, and export in a format which PC's and Mac's can read. Really good investment for the common person wanting to record stuff. They're inexpensive too, and have a decent screen size for video playback.
OR you can go all out and buy a Sony DV camera :D :D

The tranny shaft has nothing to do with the clutch so yes you can just do the shaft and leave the auto clutch set up but at least put HD clutch springs in the auto clutch .

Well since im new to this world of Banditos, 90s and 110's and now own it all, can someone explain to me the benefit of getting rid of the Hi/Low box? Other than they look gay, and limit your options of sprockets probably. Thanks
Vealmonkey
03-09-2011, 11:48 AM
You pretty much nailed it on the head. You have more options performance wise for sprockets. Also, less parts to mess up and have to maintain. And that is why you go to a manual clutch, better performance options and the manual clutches can take more power than the semi auto clutchtes and of course better control over your rpms.

Just getting into the 90-110 mods myself.....I like the US90 tank. I was thinking of doing the 8" H-tracs on the rear of mine as well. Since I have that cool chromed rear brake/carrier/sprocket cover setup with the US90 6-spline axle, I am trying to use as many US90 parts as possible...

Did you use a freeze plug to cap the kick starter hole? I've got a late 60's S90 motor kicking around, wondering if I can cannibalize the manual clutch for my 90. I've got the atc90 motor on the bench while my cylinder is getting bored to 54mm.

I've used several methods to plug up the kicker hole but the easiest is the freeze plug .
I got a motor in one time were they used a quarter and some epoxy LOL but it worked ....
Did you get the new motor mounts ?
