I just got a new pvl ignition for my 85 tecate. Is it a good upgrade? Also how do you time this kind of ignition, its looks nothing like the stock one. When I kick it over the kick starter kicks back really hard, and if you dont get your foot out of the way it will break your ankle. Any ideas on what I can do. Thanks

I remember being told that you have to get a special tool from the PVL company to properly time them. I believe it was jswinehart that was saying something about it but I might be wrong on that. I have a PVL that I plan on using for my 85 as well, so i am interested in how this works out and what you did to get it set. But I just seem to remember there is a tool or an extra measuring piece or something to set the timing. I also heard they can be a pain to get dialed in.

The directions that come with it explain exactly how to do it. If I remember right you just need a dial indicator. Once you installed it there's not really anything to dial in. Altering ignition timing can hurt or help your power output but that is true of any ignition system whether it be on your lawnmower or your Tecate.

you need one of them dial caliper things. i know your piston has to be i believe 2mm BTDC, sounds like your a bit off and your firing before the piston hits TDC.digity x had the same problem when he was installing his, but went and got the dial caliper and everything worked great for him.

A dial caliper will not do it. You must use a dial indicator. They are different.
Dial caliper (used for linear measurement):

Dial indicator (used for measuring depth):

I'd just hate to see you spend the money on one when you really will need the other.
Also, if you remove or loosen the timing plate for any reason, you will need to wrap the flywheel with a sheet of paper before before you tighten the plate down. If you don't the flywheel will rub the coils on the plate and ruin the set up.

does the pvl have a timing advance curve? Or is it fixed?
