Determining parts interchangeability?

I'm restoring an '82 Honda 200 ATC e and need to determine what parts will interchange successfully between model years. What is the best way to do this?

For instance; If Honda used the same part number for different years is this an accurate way to determine compatability?

I'd rather not fill the message boards up with "will this work?" threads. My local Honda dealer isn't very good about returning calls either.
