I was just at my local scrapyard picking up odds and ends, when I spied something familiar... a 1983 Honda Ascot FT500 lying on it's side stripped naked of plastic. I used to have one, rode it every day until about 15 years ago. Anyway, I remember seeing somewhere that the 500 head will bolt on to a 350X motor, so I grabbed it... motor, carb, exhaust... everything but the starter. How difficult is it to do this conversion? Anyone done it? Was it worth the hassle?

There is a board member on here that has done this and it looks like it worked out really well for him. I believe his screen name is ATC500X.

Atc500x installed the complete engine from a xr500 into a 350x frame. It is SWIGIN that put a 500 head on a sleeved 350x cylinder.

Your right! But not exactly a xr500 motor,ft500 motor mixed with a xr500 for the kick start in back up,but always use the electric starter.....

Back when I had an FT as my daily driver, I had to buy a starter... cost me around $500 and that was 15 years ago. That big single cylinder is rough on starters. Anyway, I have a complete engine, exhaust, and carb... not sure what to do with it now... what did you have to do to use the kick starter? Was it just a right side case and kicker shaft, or was it more complicated?

You need to split the transmission in half to install the kick shaft

Someone took the case bolts :( The pipe is split, but the header is fine... this would be so awesome in a 3fiddy frame, eh? If I decide to sell it, it'll be in the classifieds section.

Case bolts are easy to find. If you get a manual for that engine, it's really not that bad. I was extremely intimidated by splitting the engine from my Recon but once I dug into it, it wasn't that bad. I would've been screwed without a manual though.
