How much does it cost to rebuild one of these suckers the RIGHT way? I was looking to do a cam, mild porting and all new bearings and 10.5:1 piston. Any idea how how much im gonna be paying?

well just did my top end - your looking at about $400-450 for top end with similar mods. Id say the lower end would be upwards of $800-$900.

The lower end is just seals and bearings isnt it? Why would it be so much?

Could be a little cheaper, but not by much. If your doing the work.
If you do the mod the topend, I'd make sure the bottom can handle it.
A super clutch wouldn't hurt either. Let us know how it goes,

It all depends on how much of the work you are going to be doing. A wiseco piston is like $160 + shipping, cams are close to $200, gasket set $50-$100, local price for cylinder bore/hone is $60 (the machine shops in Reno are con artists), head work can be anywhere from $50-$300. I just finished my engine and scored some good deals for parts off of ebay, and my brother did the valve job for me (he works for a honda dealer that has a machine shop), and he did the cylinder bore/hone so that was free ($20 for shipping). I put all new parts in the head (exept cam), a new wiseco piston and new gaskets. It still cost me over $400 just for parts and I did the work myself. I'd say you are looking anywhere from $800-$1500 if you have a shop do it. Keep in mind you will need to rejet as well. Let us know how it turns out.

The more performance you want, the more expense.

Its def. an expensive engine to rebuild but nothing beats kicking it over for the first time and listening to it purrrrr.....

Wowza I didnt think it would be THAT expensive. Makes sense though. I think i might just do a top end for now then come winter when there is a little more cash flow split cases and get busy.

Well, when you do your top end you have to make sure your connecting rod is within specs. If that con rod is moving back and forth alot, there is no reason to put the top end back together. The sloppy lower end will beat your new upper end to death.

if you use a shop manual to put it back together will it tell you how to make sure the connecting rods are installed right?

Pat, I didnt even think of that. Im pretty confident it should be ok though...the thing came with oem fenders and its on it orig bore so i know it hasnt been beaten to death but good catch!

I'm currently in the process of building my boy's '86 350X and your price quotes are a bit high compared to what he's paying.

My local shop ordered his 10.25:1 Wiseco kit(1st overbore) for less than $120, his Web Cam camshaft( Part#55-731 grind 180 .350 lift 228-deg. duration) was $135(sent core in with order), same shop bore/hone is $48, new Honda rocker arms for about $65 each(x2), and installing valve seals/lapping valves for $85. The Vesrah gasket set was $55. Could've gone cheaper with Cometic, but the Vesrah top set is much more complete.

I didn't worry on the bottom end any since everything is so well within specs that it seems like a fresh/new bottom end.

aw dixie you should have sent the old worn out rockers to megacycle to be hardfaced...cheaper and better! My rockers were just arms without faces when I sent them in for core...came back looking mint!

It's not any cheaper(Web charges $65 each for the hardface) than buying new Honda rockers and Web Cam says with that mild profile, that new OEM rockers work fine. Had this X been mine, I would've been tempted to go 12:1 and a wilder cam with head porting and all the trimmings including hardface rockers....but then again I have 2-strokes for the fast side of life.
