View Full Version : DO NOT USE ON A HONDA TWO PIECE RIM! (why not?)

All 3 of my tires on my ATC say "DO NOT USE ON A HONDA TWO PIECE RIM". Well, the tire on the front, which is a Honda two piece rim, says that. Why not? I am getting a good used tire, which will go on the front, and I will put the front on the rear along with the other old one. Apparently, even the front tire said not to, but the previous owner had it on there anyway. Can someone tell me why?

I have always had problems with the two piece rims, they would never reseal and always off balace. i tossed them all out and got one piece, one peice rims are a dime a doze around 5 to 15 bucks each.n

When I redid my 73 atc 70 I had the wheels apart, blasted them, painted them and got new O rings from my Honda dealer and put them back together and never had a problem.

Put a tube in the split rims. I have never had a problem doing that.

I have many split rim wheels on multiple trikes I own - never ever had a problem. You have to use new rings when you split them though! real cheap through dratv.com.

tires for 2 piece rims have a wide sealing surface. a tire for a one piece rim has much less and require a lip made into the rim that it has to pop over the top of. this lip helps keep the tire on the rim. i have seen many one piece rim tires on two piece rims and not have a problem but if you were to do real hard turning with good traction it may want to pull off the rim.

i run a one piece tire and all 3 of my 2 piece rims, no problems at all.

Someone was using the roofing rubber (commercial type) for a gasket between them and loved the stuff..............
Sounds like if you do it properly, your AOK; Or just get a welded rim and be done with your issues.

For a seal between the the 2 piece rims, I have always used a piece of old inner tube with a little silicone smeared on it. Always works good.

I believe you are correct.

I run black RTV on them and they hold up great. I did that on all my split rim vehicles, and never had a flat or a bead pop.

Now, are you talking about putting RTV between the rims, or putting RTV where the bead goes?

I finally had a chance to try this recently. Seems to be working pretty good on my old 110. Before this I had just tried to silicone the 2 halves together and that worked ok for a while but they started leaking again.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^What he said^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The tires that came on two piece rims had a wide "bead"(more of a flat rubber surface). The rims I think don't even have a lip for the bead. That was the whole point of the two piece rim, you didn't have to fuss with trying to get the tire over the lip, or the bead in the grove..
Having said that, I think I have regular tires on my two piece rims, and they work just fine. Cleaned them up and sealed them and they have been holding air for years.

.... they would never reseal and always off balace.
Now that's curious...how did you determine it was the rims which were off balance and not the tire?

YEA... every 2 piece rim i had i gave to the scrap yard. the tires are such a B***H to get off the rim (at least everyone i had was.) i always had to use a fork lift, a block of wood and like 3 people... OR i used a lighter, 10 pieces of paper, and a little gasoline, and it came off rather nicely in about 30 minutes.:D

The reason it says not to run certain tires on split rims is split rims dont have that lip around the outer edges like the one piece .That lip is like a bead lock .Because you run such low pressure the beads could come off split rims when you pitch the wheeler sideways puts a lot of pressure on the beads. The tire that are made for split rims have a wide rubber area with a nylon removable bead. That what my honda dealer told me and my brothers back in the 80s.I use the split rims with the tires that say (do not use on split rim)

What I do is 1. take the guts out of the valve stem. 2. lay the tire on its side in the driveway. 3. put a metal car ramp on the side up by the bead. 4. put a 3-4 foot 2x6 halfway up the car ramp and drive my car or truck up on the ramp. Some times the bead will break .other times have to back vehicle off turn the tire quarter turn and repeat.Sometimes with the vehicle on the ramp you can hit the bead with a piece of 2x4 and big hammer.Im not saying anyone should do this .But thats how I do it.

small tires like on the 70 will fit in a 6" vise! put the tire in the vice, close, tire is free from outer edge, unbolt rim halves and your done!!
