I have a set of 86 forks for my tri-z that I am putting Progressive springs in. As per instructions I added 1.3" spacers made from pvc. Still at a loss about how much oil to put in the forks. I have an 85 manual and it says 11.3 oz. of oil per fork. I'm guessing the 86 forks may take slightly more being a larger diameter.
The instructions for the springs state that you might need to use less oil since the progressive springs will displace more oil than the stock springs since they have more coils. They also reccomended bottoming the tube in the forks when adding oil and measuring the oil level to get the proper ammount. Here is my question: Going with this procedure, and having added 11 oz of oil to each fork, there is at least 10-12" from the top of the fork to the actual oil level. The manual said something like 5.75" for normal use and the spring instructions reccomended 5.5" if the specs in the manual were greater than that.
So what am I missing here? Should I go with the measurement from the top of the fork to the actual oil level, or should I go with actual volume? To achieve the 5.5" from top of the tube (bottomed out) I'm guessing I will need at least 8-12 oz more oil per fork which would be a volume of 19-23 oz total. I am using 15W PJ1 fork tuner oil.
So if anybody is still following what I am saying and has done the before, please chime in and let me know what you have done with your set-up :)
