Usually something slides rearward and is secured by a bolt that runs through it. Most street bikes and dirt bikes the rear wheel axle slides rearward after you loosen the axle bolt and adjusters. On my Honda, the rear swingarm extends rearward at the pivot end. Look at both ends and see where its meant to slide.

Tecate or KLT? The tecate has 4 bolts that hold the carrier to the swinger. Loosen those. There is a nut with a locknut on the adjuster. Loosen the locknut tighten the nut up this will tighten your chain. Tighten locknut against nut, and tighten the 4 bolts.

If it is a KLT I just looked on bike bandit and it seems the rear carrier is in a fixed position. The KLT 250 has a chain tensioner to keep the chain tight. The only link is for an 83 model. They don't have a schematic for the 84/85 KLT. Here is the link.

There is a rod with a spring on it, that I would assume adjusts the tension on the chain.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the link! It is an earlier KLT model, I believe an 83.
