YTM225DX Lights work when not running?

Should the lights on my YTM225DX (head and tail light) work when the trike is not running, but the ignition key is on and the light switch is on? Right now It is not (with an brand new battery) and neither does the electric starter. The trike will run when I use the pull starter and then the headlights will work.
I'm just trying to figure out if it is a fuse or not because the starter or headlights do not work.

Trike only has one 10 amp. fuse. Located under seat. Black rubber sleeve,pulls apart, red wire on one side,white wire on other. Doesn't sound like a fuse to me but not positive. I'd check fuse first,then make sure all connections are good. Good luck

i have a 85 225dx and the lights do not come on till the motor is running.

Cool, thanks guys! I'm assuming then that my starter is toast.

I've heard this is a common problem on all ytm200 and 225's.

Is there any cheap fix? I've heard cleaning the connections can help. Would i clean the connections right off the starter or what ones are they referring to?

Right now with a brand new battery it does make a sound when i push the starter button.
