i know a wiring harness isnt much but i would like to pick everyones brain on how to add a charging circuit to a 185s wiring harness. the wiring diagrams look the same except there is no branch off from the ignition switch.

I got a wire diagram on here from 3ww that had an optional inset that showed the charge circuit.

Looks like it was an option when they were sold new.

Not sure where but it IS on this site somewhere

keywords atc185s 185sx 200x200sx80-84b i believe

it IS called 'optional DC power kit'

R, R/B and Dg connect it to the harness and from that you have the battery, regulator and and ac generator, whicvh you already have for your lights.

so all you need is a battery and regulator

ah HA!
I found part of it
now lets see if I can upload it

ahhhh HA!! x2

found the rest of it

why you want powa storage?

make it street legal?

its a 200ed motor on a 185 frame. i dont have a pull start so i have a battery wired straight to the starter with a switch. i just have to take off the battery and charge it once a month.

so it looks like i should be able to pull out of the red wire on the regulator and straight to the + post on the battery with a fuse?

I need to print out the diagram 'cause its too hard to remember flipping back and forth, plus the coffee and glasses aren't working yet.

That Dg wire looks like a ground thru your existing harness.
I'd make sure you had another serious battery ground to frame or engine to multiply.

Whatever you do, make sure theres a fuse in there somewhere, maybe even more than one. Mine works with a 7 amp fuse, the starter and lights that is.

You're talking about a 200 es? hi lo reverse?
Pull start broke?

sure LOOKS pretty simple but I've got 3 on deck right now with elect nostart problems, so I'm not sure I'm the one to ask.

You have 2 yellow wires coming out of the alternator? Flywheel side of the case?
Anything else coming out of there?

Where's the battery?
In the trunk?

...so the regulator should put out 14 volts but I wonder what the amperage should be? Hi perf light coils put out 200 watts...awww shucks,
it's either too early for math, or I really do NOT know what I'm talking about.

How about a 10$ solar battery charger
Smoke alarm?

good luck and have fun

We call this 'talkin' to Howie'

This is howie learn.

nice. yea its an es with no reverse. i have a ground to the motor and frame from the battery so im good on that.

you should be able to get away with a generic regulator if the alternator wires match up, like 2 positives? or 3 similar colors coming out of your alternator.

Whatchoo got coming out of the flywheel area?
That will tell you which regulator to look for.

Some hondas have one hot wire and some have 2 or 3 in order to 'temper' or essentially smooth out the ac pulses.

I keep thinking it may almost be a pulsating dc current as opposed to true ac but that doesn't really matter.

Parts is parts, you just gotta find the right ones.
I think they call for a 10 amp fuse in the charging/starter circuit but all I had laying around was 7 amps and it works.

safer is better

from what ive seen its 2 coming out of the gen. i never opened it up to see but i can grab 2 coming out and running to the regulator. from there to the lights. if i get bored enough today ill o out and look at it and see what i can come up with. for sure i would have to add a regulator? i figured i could splice in somewhere. this trike is by no means mint lol its just a trike i can trash with.

Great stuff in here..........

One thing that comes to mind is that a properly charged battery is around 13V or more.. But regulated at some point to only provide 12V to the lights.

I just did some work on a 400EX, I wondered why it had a diode in the circuit? I believe they only allow electricity to flow one way but that may have something to do with the charging circuit. I'd have to look at the wiring diagram.

I pretty sure you can make this work by swapping some parts. Anytime something spins, it's easy to generate power, keep us posted!

i know for sure a diode is a one way resistor. thats all it does it prevent back feed. i still havent looked at it but the day is young and im already dirty so i may go tinker. a fully charged 12v battery should push 14 volts just as a reference. once my battery drops to 12.5 it is no longer reliable to turn my motor fast enough to fire.

I cant find any info regarding output, even from ricky stator and the hi perf coil manufacturers

All they say is like 200 watts output. but no voltage ratings.
What is this, a secret fer godssake?

Specs kinda hint at 100 volts AC coming from the alternator so pretty sure you dont wanna run THAT into your battery.

..so ac to a regulator to diode it down to (pulsating) DC and then limit the current to the battery.

I mean, a one amp charger WILL have them boiling sizzling within minutes so it has to be low

hey ya know what?

I heard that the old trail 90's USE the battery as a regulatorin some way or as a powersoak like a marshall amp.

Too bad you can't find the whole harness from the es bike that your engine came from
