View Full Version : How test rear monoshock?

I think the rear monoshock on my 200x has no dampening. When I compress the rear with my weight using the grab bar, and release, it just slams up, like pure spring. Ride is lousy, bouncy. Am I correct that this means the shock is not working?

Yep...Not working...Most likely the seal head started leaking...and theres no oil left in it...most common...and it gets worse from there.

what about nitrogen? is the shock gas canister'd or just one unit?

Its got an external cannister and there is an aduster on the bottom of the shock. Some used the term pogo stick. I'd say its got that tendency on the bumps. Some weird noises on the big bumps. Probably fully extending and going clunk.

The clunk would be the shock botteming out internally...The adjustement is for your Rebound dampning...Can slow it down or quickin up how fast the shock "rebounds" from being fully compressed put simply... Nitrogen dose not just Evaporate from a shock...heh it leaks..and if theres leaks...its time for a rebuild/inspection, oil change....at the very least.

Looking to rebuild my 85 200X rear shock, where can I get the proper shock seals? Anyone rebuild shocks from the forums?

I'm taking mine into a local pro. He says $75 for labor, $20 for fluid and gas, $40 for seal and possibly $40 for the bladder if its shot. So, just shy of $200 if it needs all of the above, but certainly at least $135.00

Buying a used one might be ALOT cheaper option, but then again its already a 25 year old shock. Your call, but I hear what your saying. Been there and its a Pogo stick!

Put in a used shock I bought and ebay, and what a difference! Mega dampening, especially on rebound.

Does that 4 position adjuster just go round and round? I think I set it on 3 and that's probably too much rebound dampening. It comes up real slow on rebound.
