New purchace: 1986 Honda 250ES!

Hi everybody. I'm still pretty new here, but I'd just like to share that I am the proud new owner of an '86 Big Red as of today. I scooped it up for 400 bucks from my boss' father; the trike's original owner.

I'll have to take some pics of it in the daylight tomorrow.

Any who, I have 3 other trikes: an '81, '83, and '85; all 200's (except for the '85 which is a 200 M). I have never owned a 250, nor do I know much about them.

I was just wondering if someone could tell me something about them and what all they have in common with their 200 counterparts. I also need to find a few things for it such as a choke cable, replacement rear plastics (the rear fenders & rubber mud flaps), a right side cover, and possibly some replacement decals. I'm probably going to end up going through the carb, too.

Any help is much appreciated.

I have an 85 ad just got an 87

Check the gear oil first thing (after engine oil)
Rear differentials are,...what do they say? maint free?
It only holds 3 oz (yes, THREE ounces) of 80 wt hypoid gear oil and the last 2 I got seems like the stuff evaporates or condenses since there no leaks.

The carb, since you mentioned choke cable. has a very different choke.

Ya know the main throttle, piston, needle thingie?

well the choke is the same idea

Picture a pencil eraser with the metal part, put a pin in the end and thats it.
It slides in a hole to open some internal passage.

they get STUCK sometimes so bad that they need to be drilled out.

Hopefully thats not why your choke cable isnt working

Took me 3 days of soaking w. pbblaster to get mine to move but it did and I got thru the carb and it starts instantly now.

read the posts on the if its an issue for you.

I guess they eat timing chains too so if its not noisy like a valve clatter, keep changing the oil and filter and dont let anyone rev it like some crazies like to do.

well, the ones that dont have to fix 'em.

yer gonna love that thing more than a turbocadillac.

There really is no similarities, except they have three weels. The Big red reds are my fav. and a fine example of Honda's craftsman ship at the time. the rear fenders you can get from maier, and every thing else you should have no problem finding on here.

Hey thanks a lot fellas. I'm really excited about this one. I can't believe how much torque-ier/peppier it feels compared to my 200's. I plan on bring this one back to original condition as much as possible over the next few months. Here are some pics:

As you can see, the rear plastics have seen better days and the orig. tank has been replaced with a plastic counterpart. I was able to fix the choke cable this afternoon, but I still want to go through the carb because the idle surges when it's warmed up.

Just a side note, what are the largest size tires that would fit on this? Just curious.

Glad you got to ride it early on without having to work on it for weeks before the first ride.
i had a thought since I just went thru my carb.

To keep that choke happy, some kind of oil that is compatible with rubber
(marvel mystery??)

will dripdrain down inside of the choke cable right where it needs to go.

The rest is pretty simple or standard more like it.
More jets to clean.

read the info on your chemicals so you dont ruin any rubber parts.
I washed mine in hot water with mild soap after I got it all clean and complete blowdown with compressed air.

Scared myself after I read all the cans of stuff I used to get through it.

That's one carb you'd really rather not have to do twice.

I wouldn't matter making it too pretty.
Ugly is akin to theftproof.

You can accumulate new parts like fenders as $$ allows but most people hide the good stuff in the rafters and ride 'em with the old stuff to avoid the heartache of
new damage.
