you ask a 3 wheeler forum to ask if you should trade a dirt bike for a trike. lol looks to me like the trike is a bit sketchy, but id take the trike and turn it around to look a bit nicer

I have no clue what the bore is but I know its either a 270, or Honda line 300r or Mugen 360 kit. The guy tells me its a 1984 250R, but I say its 81-82. The guy he bought it from got it for $2500 from a guy who raced it in the desert.

Nothing sketchy about it that bike has alot of classic goodies and a good resto job will make it shine. But I'd leave it looking the way it is and go over it . I tend to like the monster look of it.

Depends on if you want it to ride it or to just have it....That thing looks beat and probably needs work to run/drive right.

I wouldn't do the trade. You could get good money for that little CR80, money you could buy a much nicer trike with. Nothing really stands out on it IMHO. All that it has on it is a Mikuni TMX carb, a 200X front end, ratty aftermarket tank, some yellow spray paint and the wrong rear shock. If the guy paid $2500 for it, then he's an effin idiot. That thing's worth $300 tops. Be smart, nobody else would pay him the money that the CR80 is worth for that trike. You could buy a far cleaner 82R and have plenty of cash left over to pimp it out way beyond the machine you posted.
By the way, that's a stock cylinder and head.

Well he did the UGLY paint job. He said it had a VERY nice red tank and fenders. So when when he panted them it shure saved the plastics from fading.

Only thing I really see that looks interesting is the swinger and shock. The carb might be big but it looks like it's cobbed on there and the engine looks pretty stock to me. Not a 300r kit thats for sure. I say pass. Not worth the trade, maybe worth $900 cash but that's gonna take a lot of elbow grease to make it respectable again.

Nah a 12 year old CR80 is not worth that much. My brother could only get $1200 for his nice 2000 CR125 a couple years ago. KBB says a 98 CR80 is worth about a grand, and you rarely get blue book for toys.
Either way, that trike looks beat to me.

it was well worth it to me but mine was a 89.

As far as if its worth it, I would say probably not. You will spend more money to get it running again. But i would probably do it anyway just because I like the old R's and i would rather have that than a bike:)

Its a cool looking 81 or 82 air fooler., and it had 83-84 forks on it it looks, but i dont think id trade a clean dirtbike for a ratty old trike. its gonna need gone thru, you might be in over your head.
how about ya give the guy $400-500 cash and go home with it.

So the swingarm is a CALFAB? Out of curiosity how do you know? Does it have some kind of markings? Looks more like a Dico swinger to me but I'm not authority. Can anyone else take a look at this guys pics and shed some light?
310 in the stock cylinder or is it aftermarket and if it is who made it?
Who knows any history on KNARLY MAN porting? I'm curious to hear about it.

i couldn't see myself dumping out more than 700-800 for it, but im one of those guys who thinks no trike is worth more than 1500 unless all out redone, like some peoples ice racing 250s. but seriously even with all these parts it looks like someone beat the p iss out of it and everything is gonna be worn to hell, even with cool parts they probably have some mileage on them and might need to be re-done

Hey,
You asked, you recieved honest answers. So here is the one that it seems you want to hear. Trade dirtbike. There you go! You got the answer you were looking for, and just for an extra measure of feel good you go ahead and give the guy a few hundred to boot just because it is a AFTERMARKET OLD SCHOOL GOLDMINE!. Now you will be able to tell everyone that you got a great deal and in your mind you will be happy, and the guy that gets your bike and the boot money will be happy. Theres the answer you want to hear. Not an honest one but this is America so we don't have to consider honest answers. Some times we just want someone to tell us what we want to hear.
Now before you slam me for what I have written, sit back and think about it. These guys that have responded to your post are hard core experienced trikers, so their OPINIONS are based on FACT and EXPERIENCE, but then again we dont have to respect that either. BTW Thanks guys for your input, I for one appreciate it and it is this advice that makes this forum so great.

If it's a CalFab it will be aluminum. Take a magnet. The carb is a Mikuni TM which the biggest they made was a 38mm. Unless it has been bored larger which is possible. I have a 38mm TM that was bored to 41mm.

looks like a PK swinger to me I had one for a first gen R and it resembles that one close. Im not feeling the price on it either I bout a nearly OEM 83 R with a 300 kit on it for 900.... im not feeling this plus if it had all these mods and done corectly WOULDNT IT HAVE BEEN BETTER TAKEN CARE OF? I mean come on its a spray bomb nightmare... you dont see no 50k drag cars with spray paint and ratty parts all over it?

I gotta agree with Syko... Looks like its been rode hard and put away wet... I think for the money you should be able to come up with a much cleaner machine. I would give 100 bucks for it, but I dont like the aircoolers that much...

We gave you great advice and honest answers. Sounds like your ears have been tickled by an aftermarket name dropping goon. Don't get conned. The biggest you can go on a stock air cooled 250R cylinder is 290cc. That cylinder on the machine is not a 310. I still say $300 for it. That thing is used and abused along with the aftermarket parts on it. You really wanna find out if that guy is full of shite, ask him what speed that machine tops out at. That question alone seperates the BS'ers from the truthful guys.

Its got some neat aftermarket parts on it (Shock, swingarm, gas tank looks to be a desert one), but its all in REALLY rough shape. The carb is $200 brand new still today and isn't that big of a deal. The cylinder can be ported by 1,000 different people to get the same results as that one. The whole thing is really beat looking and unless its a verifiable Team Honda machine, I'd give 2-300 for it and thats about it.

Whats the bike worth? It's 12 years old, although it's in prestine condition. Is it worth 1000$, is that about the ballpark??
That trike looks all cobbled together IMO.... Whats the hose zip tied on thew right side?? Shock makes it sit very high = wrong shock I'd assume.....
If it's got aftermarket goodies that can bring in more than the CR then do it. If you would rather have a trike and attempt restoring it, then do it. But if every goody on there is stripped, drilled out, beat up (and thats just on the outside) I wouldn't pay too much cash for it.
Has it thrown a chain, has the crank been touched in years? How well does that air filter - filter?? Looks like a mess to me but it may have a few good dollar items on it.............
If the inside is anything like the outside, then your looking at allot of work.

Don't trade...It's no gold mine...more like hill-rod junk. Third pick down (original post) shows engine casting damage, a cobbled rear engine mount, some other non-original hacking that I can't completely understand. There could be a few rare parts there, $200-$300 worth maybe. Just my opinion.

OT - Xfile, if your the guy thats taken care of me before and has those springs, could you please email me and maybe give me a number I can talk to you with about those rear shock springs?? Thanks very much!
I sent you a PM a couple weeks back, but the board has been messed up. I figured at least you'd SEE this, LOL..............

Looks like a 81-84 engine, radiator hose to hold carb on and to space it away from the engine?
No air box, no skid plate on a desert racer?
