I have a set of rear oem aluminum wheels for the 87 200X. They just have some pitting and scraches but not dents. I know you can have them turned but can you just sand then buff them will mothers polish? Has anyone done this?

Do you want to polish them? It can be done, but it's labor intensive. Start with an abrasive wheel on a drill before sanding, it'll make things easier.
It's best to have a variable speed polisher/grinder because you'll get better results than hand polishing with mothers.

For cleaning up aluminum rims, I use a Mother's Powerball and some mag polish. But for pits/scratches, you'll need to start with somthing more agressive.
Are the OEM wheels clear coated?
