i just did the tried and true method of multiple wet sanding stages with a little bit of mothers mag polish and some wd 40. i was actually really suprised to see what i got so far.
there is still a little bit of the infamouse browning on the bottom edges of the tank but it's not too bad. up to this point i have used from 80 grit up 1000. i think with a lil more work and a few more steps up in grit to around 2000 i should get a little more shine out of this old girl.

oh i also used some 0000 steel wool for the area's around the fill hole, and some of the tougher area's on the bottom side. and the first time i sanded it. it looked like i had got the oxidization off. then once the water dried off completly it was back. kinda like when a rock gets wet it lookes good but once it is dry it looks like a dull rock again.

It looks like you got lucky, you started w/ a tank that was only oxidized and not brown. I think it looks good so far. keep up the good work.
i am making tank covers if you decide to go that way in the future. here is the link... http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?109530-86-87-Tecate-tank-cover-intrest
