View Full Version : Why do you love your 200x?

So I'm wondering why everyone is so crazy about the 200x. I'm not being rude, I'm just curious. I've never ridden one, but I have ridden a TRX 200 which is a real dog-with the power to weight ratio of a ATC 110.

It seems like the 200x is the most prized ATC, sometimes ever more than a 350x or 250r. I just want to know why. Nostalgia? Rarity? Reliability? Resale Value?

i personally had an 86 x and it was an awsome trike. did pretty good in the dunes. was good on the trails and was an all around fun trike. the 200x is in no way a dog it's got alot of pep. the 86-87's had the square tube frame and also had a 6 speed tranny. 83-85 only had a 5 speed but still good trikes.

I think its just that fact that it is an awesome trail machine and can be picked up for real cheap. I couldn't touch a running 350X for what I got my 200X for, $450. Probably couldn't have even got a 350X that didn't run for that price.

I choose the 200X because it is cheap to buy, has suspension and a manual clutch.

The '85 200x is what brought me back to trikes. To me, (before I got my 350x) it seemed like the ultimate trike. Cool looking, suspension, etc. I am a trail rider, so was never interested in an r.

Hey guys,
How superior is the 200x compared to it's little brother the 200S? Is it the suspension that makes it better? more power?

The suspension is great, I also love having a clutch. The power should be about the same, I think they have different cams, so the power band might be different.

First gens are cheap and easy to find parts for. Plus they look pretty cool

Here's a power to weight ratio list with 86 200x. I'm not for sure on the upgrade hp numbers, but I think they might be reasonable?

I regret selling my last summer for 300.00. Parents told me i had to move out on short notice, didn't have no where to keep it. then they let me stay, oh so mad.

I think it's because they are the most common and cheap fully suspended trike out there. They can be had for like $300-600 in running and good condition out here. I personally didn't like my 200x, didn't have enough power for me, I have a chance to get an '86 200x for $200 in good condition but am not gonna do it cause I didn't really like either of my '85 200x's....

I like them because they adaptable, just powerfull enough to slide them around, cheap, easy to work on, and dependable if you take care of them. I've got five of them all with different suspension mods and I like em all.

inv3ctiv3, How close is Santa Barbara to Monterey? If you are close I will send my brother to get that 86 you are not interested in. I just bought an 85 200x in relatively good shape, and it is the first one I have seen in person, and I think it is a dinosaur compared to my 87 200x. I know I will get a lot of nay sayers, but I have not ridden it yet but I can't imagine it running with my 87 either.

The 86/87 200X is a completly different trike compared to the first generation. I loved the pair of 86's that I had due to them being very light weight and had plenty of power for the woods. The only thing I didnt like was that the suspension was pretty soft for me, but there was a guy on here who adapted a liquid R suspension on his 86 200X. Would have loved to ride that one!

See mine was a POS, both of them had motor problems so I upgraded to a 350x. I do really wanna get that '86 200x but just don't have the time at the moment. I also think I am a bit too big for a 200x....200lbs and 6'0

They are quick (not as fast as my 250R) fun little trail bikes.

Great Trike! imo. Light weight,Dependable as it gets if you take care of it. I have had my 85 since 91 or 92 Replaced the piston and rings back then and lots of oil changes, around 5 or 6 Spark plugs and a carb kit. and still fires on the first kick! Just got done riding in the snow. http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z388/jasonocamb96/snowyhill.jpg

Don't forget the 200x was designed to be a racer. So it actually qualifies as a "race" trike. But not too many people acknowledge that and I know why since I own one. They're slow on the top end but they are a lot of fun for trails and trees.

When you put some work into them and a few good parts they are actually a very competitive racer. Here is a pick of my mx 200x. 113754

I'm 6' 1" and 215 and LOVE my 200X.

I use mine as a sport/cruiser. It's just a TON of fun to hop on and go for a 5-10 minute cruise to relieve the stress of the day, hit up the dirt lot nearby and slide it around, do some donuts, couple jumps, and head home.

I bought mine because I was looking to upgrade from my 110 (which hauls mine person around pretty easily, pop into low gear for the steep trails) to something with suspension and more power. I've never ridden a clutched vehicle before, but my worries about it went away within the few couple of days, and now the clutch is my cup of tea.

Yeah, sure it's not as quick on the topend as a 2 stroke or a 350X, but it gets you there. Plus it's taught my brother and friend how to drive clutch, so I think it's a good first sport trike/vehicle :)

I had a 86 200x I bought a year ago and sold it a couple months laiter for a 85 250R but, mine needed fork seals and a shock rebuild I could see the x being pretty nice for riding around here with the people I ride with its fast enough to hang with the newer 4x4 golf carts. That 200 x was I think the sharpest looking trike made the color contrast was perfect. But I still wouldnt trade back. 2 stroke all the way!!!!!

I love the 200x for the simple fact of it being a great trail machine, thats all i really ride and it does the job well, if i want to hit up the track i take my cr80 or blaster.

I like mine because on top of being affordable to buy, they're affordable to hop up. Still plenty of after market parts available. I personally like how small they are as well.

I have an 85 200x, fully hopped up and it rocks. I had a ride today with a friend on his stock 81 250r and I can keep up. His ride is new rebuilt it's just my is soooo fast.

Gota love the 200x. when properly modded that is.

Must be a co-incidence but I just posted a bit about 200x's in a junkyard thread.

Great little machines, that define what trike riding is all about... Fun.

Not the most powerful machines around, but certainly peppy enough to get into power slides, pop wheelies, and throw some dirt. enough suspension to give you a plush ride at trail speeds.

Disk brakes, full suspension, manual clutch, lightweight, sturdy, and cheap in the USA as it turns out... (a 200x in good condition in Australia start at about $1000 and go up from there). What's not to like?

Essentially they were the Raptor 250 of the eighties.

I'm with inv3ctiv3, but it was too weak for me and I'm 5'3" and 130#. And I haven't had any luck with the motors either (except my son's is good, 1 out of 4 motors). But for how cheap we got 3 of them we were able to build 2 and have many parts. Great kids trikes or starter trikes & my daughters auto-x is the best trail rig ever. I can't see anything being more comfortable and sure footed. All the neigborhood kids come over and ride that 3-wheeler, handles like it's on rails and smooth over bumps. Bottem line: cheap and nice to look at, comfortable.

I was riding(trails/woods) this summer with some people. Most trails are very tight. No way a widened axle is gonna fit thru some spots.
I was riding 3rd in line out of 5. In front of me was 2 experianced riders both on 350x big bores. I was on there grab bars the whole time. I was working my 200x pretty good that day. Thru the wood trails 200x is hard to beat in my opinion. This is the reason I like the 200x so much.
For me a great bike to slide around and handle in tight trails.
Now before someone thinks Im saying a 200x is as fast as a 350x... Im not saying that. During our ride when we got to a wide open trail, sudden hill climb the 350x left me in the dust.

My connection with my 200x is very much a way for me to feel conected with my father. He bought it new while he and my mother were young, and he passed away while my mother was carrying me in her stomach. So It's now in my possession and I have done quite a bit with it.
