I am trying to check compression in my 1985 200x. It starts and runs great but smokes sometimes.. Every few minutes though when riding it starts to smoke more and then will clear up after a few minutes.

Here is what I am wondering. How many times do I need to kick start it to get an actual compression reading. After 10 kicks with the choke closed and the throttle open it gets to 150-155 psi. I couldn't find any info on how many times you should kick it over to get an accurate reading. 10-12 seems a bit much..

I know the head valve cover gasket is leaking so I was going to do a top end gaskets and valve seals nut I wasn't sure about the piston. Spark plug is a little black but not soaked in oil.

What color is the smoke ? The oil seal at the head gasket might be bad but if your going to replace the top end gaskets you should a least replace the piston rings and give it a hone . You will probably see the problem when you take it apart . 4/5 kicks should give you a good reading on your compression testor .

Choke should be open (off), during a compression test.

when i do compression tests, I just kick until the gauge sits at the same psi for more than 3 kicks. just my .02 though.

Well i got the top end all apart.
The exhaust valve looks like it has some carbon build up on it. The intake valve looks like new.
The combustion camber once I wiped it down was almost completely smooth and polished. It wiped off with just a rag.
The piston is HONDA piston with only 965 stamped on the top. Is this a stock size piston?

I am not sure how far to go on this engine to be honest..
I know all the gears and clutched worked great. If I get near the 500 range I can just get a lifan 200 with electric start and reverse.

Any suggestions would be great.

When you are doing a compression test with a pull start 200x, you are supposed to pull it 2 times before testing.

yes thats a stock piston, re ring it and some new valvle seals, check the intake valave they are known to dish , it may need replaced
