to further explain this my neighbor just got an old it400 running thats been disassembled for years.
i bought it a while back then gave it back to him.
he replaced the rings in the piston and other small stuff and it should start now.
i have a 85 atc250r thats built for nothing but speed and race theres no puting around on this r u either go all or nothing.
and i want to challenge him to a drag race.

Going to race top-end? Assuming so, the IT is not geared to the moon so high that it has to roll off a steep hill to start off in 1st.....and the race is not severely downhill, a well built '85R should dust it.

I'm just going by the only big bore bikes I've ever had compared to my average liquid R(not my fastest R). I've had an '86 YZ490, and '82 CR480R, and a new '92 WR500. Out of those, the WR500 was the fastest and a well built R could pull it in a long distance race.

Just one person's opinion and impression, though. Don't bet money on a race based on my 2-cents....:)

It's were basically the equivalent of a modern WR. Same engine foundation as an equivalent YZ, but less agressive porting, restricted intake and spark arrested exhaust with a typically smaller carb. But, don't discount that International Trails bike for something less that lots of smooth power. If it's running well, i'd expect it to whip the R. I've witnessed It 465's and 490's. They are no joke! The older yz400 engine was regarded as one of the better open class engines of the time, so i'd suspect it would be great as well in It trim.....

how would you compare the it 400 465 or 490 to any cr500 engine?
if my 250r dont beat it im goin to buy a cr500.
im trying to buy the it400 from him but he doesnt want it to go.
he told me the bikes worth 3k to 5k after he gets it running right.
but i have never seen an it series model sell for over 2000.
if i do buy an it 400-490 i can get one on ebay for much cheaper then he claims its worth.

The 400 is the tamest...there's also a 425...Runs Close to the 465...Never had one touch mine, The 465 pulls hard off the bottom compared to a cr500...(mine did with a little work anyways) But a cr is a better handling bike and has a bit more when you get into it, 3k for an old it is Nuts...1000 bucks TOPS in decent running shape...with a fresh motor...

Not really a fair comparison to a late cr500/kx 500 engine. 3-5K..... Ahhhh, ok.

I would have to think the cr500 engine would be top dog across the board!

i was told a it 400 has a faster top speed then a cr500.
it would be really nice to own both bikes.

i want to buy a it490 off ebay but right now im paying off that 250r i bought.

My neighbor has an old it490 thing was a tank but a fast tank at that. Thing would do 90 mph on the gps on the ice. It was fast on the top end and had decent torque but I never rode it so I can't really say how fast it was out of the hole.

Not sure if that came out right......the cr500 in my opinion would be faster across the board! They are pure evil.......lol! I wouldn't bet against it...
