auto x carb question

Do I need to use a intake to do the auto x? Im using a 185s motor and the intake makes the carb hit the frame. the carb bolts right to the head, but it sits at a slight angle. will this work? thanks. jim

The 200x manifold has to go on. It will fix the angle.

The 185s intake will work fine also. Have you fabricated your rear brake pedal and mount and linkage yet?

vealmonkey, how do you get the 185 intake to work? with the intake bolted up, the top of the carb hits the frame. I even thought about flipping it around but that doesnt work. then thought maybe having the intake milled a bit shorter. jim

I used a 200x intake boot and 200x carb I couldnt get the 185s intake to fit.

I was out looking at the intake. I got a extra intake, I thought about taking it to a belt sander and getting rid of the angle. then slotting the mounting holes on the carb. any reason why it couldnt be run without the intake? or is the intake a heat insulator too? jim

Intake is an insulator, just be careful. I put my 200E manifold on it, and the amount taken off cracked the manifold, I took off 5 thousanths and it blew a crack through. try sanding a little, then quenching to reduce heat shock and keep it cool. A manifold off a Honda Scrambler 250 twin will bolt up, but will have to be reclocked and angled, but it fits my keihin and the head with no leaks. my .02 tho

The back side of the intake manifold has a O ring to seal it. My sugestion would be to get a 83-85 Honda 200x manifold. I ran into this same problem on mine, and I just had to buy a 200x manifold to get it to work. Im not 100% for sure, but you could also possibly use the XR 200 dirtbike manifold from 1981 and up, excluding the dual carb model in mid 80's obviously. Good luck!

thats a good idea, why did the XR use dual carbs??? seems like overkill.

i talked to a buddy thats done these before. he told me he just cuts the 185 manifold puts a tube over the manifold and epoxies it back together. Im giving it a try this weekend! jim

I just cut the intake. basically cut it 3/4 way through on the short side of the radius. pulled the intake back about 10mm and it looks like the carb will clear the spine of the frame. Now I have to go to ace hardware and see if they have some kind of vulcanizing epoxy. my plan is to put some foil or aluminum sheet inside to give some support on the inside of the manifold and fill the gap from the outside. I'll try to get some pics. Fortuantely I got a couple extra 185 manifolds so if I screw it up, I wont feel bad. jim

why go through all of that??? a 200x intake works 100% as is.... the 200x has a little bit bigger carb and can be used also

You could probably buy a used 200x manifold from somebody on here for what the epoxy will cost lol. Around here epoxy is over 5 bucks for a little tube.
