View Full Version : Thinking of a 200 autoX, What's the best 200 Swap?

I have a lot of parts for an autoX. What would be the best motor and what motors fit easily or would bolt right on? The frame is a 1984 200X. Appreciate any input! Any difference between the 200M, 200S, and does the 83 200ES work?

ES and M are good if you are going for electric start, but for all out performance as well as space saving, go for the S. It's basic and they have less things to worry about than an ES or M. The 200E is good if you want to go through rough terrain, due to the dual range gearbox. Low range can pull stumps and cars around, literally. High is just as fast as the S.

Any motor will go in BUT, E, M, and ES will need front cradle mods due to the electric start, unless you cap the starter hole with a plastic plug and ditch the starter. Also the dual range box might need to be bypassed in the rear but not sure.

I agree with the S being easiest. For temporary uses, I may do that. But later on, I hope to put my TRX200SX quad motor in it. It's chain driven, same size, has reverse + electric start.

I just wish the S had hi-low gears for towing. I want to pull my rowboat, I hope it still can manage once spring rolls around.

Appreciate the replies. Anyone tried a 1995 XR200 motor? This posting on Craigslist says it can be done but I'm not sure what he means by changing the trike kickstart. Here's the link,

I would love the reverse option if it wasn't to difficult!

You can get a 200E and take out the starter and have hi-lo, a 5 speed, and a good motor to mod. Thats what my 200 S/E has in it, and its been bored and cammed, it flies and pulls.

Can you imagine racing that? how many racers would be flabbergasted to see an automatic win a race? flattrack or jumps, it would be a sight to see!

I know exactly what you mean. I'm getting real annoyed of dragging all my trikes out of my garage. I'm fairly certain I can make my quad engine fit. I just need to figure out how to simplify the wiring so it's just a kill switch, elec. start button, and maybe a headlight. I may just use the S or X wiring and maybe mod it to work with elec. starter....not sure how that'd work but I will hopefully figure it out.

I don't see why Honda didn't make all their trikes have reverse. The trx200sx chain driven one had reverse, so why couldn't the 200s or 200x?

You cant fit the 200es motor because it is shaft drive. If you want a easy swap either use a 185 or 200, with any of the electric start 200's like the 200e or 200m you will need to notch the frame and wire the electric start.

When I did mine I used a 185s motor and its decently fast. I have a thread on my autox build if you want to search for it.

Like others have said, the 200s motor is best. I've got one of those waiting for just such a conversion! Maybe I'll get to it this year.

Just curious, could you use a 200es engine if you also used the es rear end?

If the axle tab mounts are the same on the axle.

the 200sx would be great with the electric start and reverse!! I used 185 bottoms with 200 top ends and am pretty happy. If I had it to do over I would have gone with the Lifan 200 with electric start

I'm glad that i have 200sx engines. What I'm going to do is just use my 200x or s engines in the quad frame, that way both things are still running. I will have one elec start and reverse quad and one trike.

I just don't know how it would be adding a battery to the X frame, maybe by removing the airbox or something.

I did this conversion last fall. '84 200s motor with a 200x piston (bringing up the compression ratio) I tried the 200s carb it was too lean, had to use 200x carb to run right with K&N filter and aftermarket exhaust. The motor is a bolt in took less than an hour to install. The rear brake foot lever was the only challenge. I made a spacer and used a 200s/185s lever and a long 10mm bolt, that way I used the stock rear brake actuator and master cylinder. Just made a small bracket to bolt it together. It works like a charm. We replaced the clutch lever with a rear brake lever & cable, so I have foot brake & hand brake on the rear and a functioning parking brake.
