so im prob gonna finish my fender restore today or tomorrow and i wanted to get yalls opinion of spraying the underside of the fender with something for strength and protection. its on an 86 350x that is a rider and will prob never be original . i have already cut out the small cracks around the front , bottom area. im sure im not the first person to think of this , so im lookn for a " yeah, go for it. it works great" or a " no, you dont want to do that because........." i bought some rubber spray because i knew it had to be flexable. any thoughts?

The only problem I see is the added weight. Which causes fenders to droop and crack......
The rubber coating itself may help hold things together, or cracks from continuing.
You would probably have to scuff it up real good to get it to stick.

I think the bad points would outweigh the benefits.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone breaking fenders from rocks coming off the tires. I wouldn't do it myself.

wrecked my left original fender this fall, exactly like this. Darn old railbed rocks and mudlite tire pattern dont make for a good mix.

Seems like it would hurt alot more than it would help. The added weight will most likely cause the fenders to sag, and possible even break under that much extra weight. Also I would think their would be issues with adhesion on a part as flexible as rear fenders, once it chips it will just peel off as dirt and moisture make its way under it.

NOT a good idea, over the past couple bikes i have had i have experimented with the spray box liner with the adhesive as well and after one season of wet/dry wet/dry it just starts falling off.

The added weight would be a very bad thing, that rubberized stuff is very heavy. You can buy flexable paint that you could paint the top and bottom side that would add very little weight wise and it would look decent and seal some of the small cracks. Best thing would be start a coin jar for a set of Maier rear fenders.

Leave it be and just RUN IT
If its a rider, its gonna get cracked and broken-scratched. Once they got to where they dont keep the mud off of you, just buy a new set of maiers. Just my opinion
