I have a 1983 honda ATC 250R and i decided it was time to do some upgrades and repaint the frame. I started tearing the bike down and everything was going good untill i got to the swingarm pivot bolt. I removed enerything the repair manual said I needed to remove but I cant get the pivot bolt out, I tryed turning it thinking maby it was threaded in but that didn't work so I tryed hitting it with a hammer, and twisting it while hitting it with a hammer but it didn't even move 1/4 of an inch. Is there something im doing wrong or do i have to cut it out and get a new one?

Dammit!

You need a BIG hammer. 10+ pounds. Put the nut on backwards to protect the thread and knock it loose. You can beat on the thing for a week with a small hammer and it won't move a millimeter.

If you can't get the hammer in there, you need a large punch. Not one of those long skinny ones. Something with some mass.

yeah, be careful not to mushroom the end. probably be needing a new one. mine was up against a 40 ton press and a torch, and it went nowhere. had to cut it apart.

Had to do this couple weeks ago on an 85 250r. Lots of wd-40 and let it sit overnight. Then get a heavy hammer (10+ as dammit said) or something else heavy you can hit a punch with.

I used a huge steel screw until I got the pivot bolt flush with the frame, then I used a long drillbit that would fit through the frame hole and knocked it right out in 2-3 hits. Letting it soak overnight helps a lot. I probly tried 500 hits before I decided to let it sit overnight and only got it to move an 1/8th of an inch.

is this just common on 250R's or other trikes? i picked up a junker 350X that has been sitting outside for years and i was afraid i wouldn't be able to get the pivot bolt out with out cutting it, but it ended up loosing up and coming right out.

It can happen on anything with a swinger really. I had to cut mine out with a sawzall on my 200x, and when I was doing it I noticed cut marks on the frame where a previous owner had to do it as well lol. I make sure to keep it greased now.

you can cut it out like most do, maybe take it to a machine shop and have them press it out to save it. if that work install some grease fittings in the swing arm so you can lube it every so offten. lucky ive had 2 swings with them installed and it make it nice for sliding the pivot bolts out

Just so you know, in case you did not kinow, and end up needing a replacement.
Contact yamahondaman here on the boards for a nice shiney new one made from some exotic material.
His work is sooooo nice.

i use a really large air hammer. i only had one out of maybe 50 that it would not get out. also i use Kroil, it will work 10 times better than PB blaster.

Update: even with 2 brand new hard metal blades, the sawzall didn't work. Time to break out the torches.

No, a Metabo works much more accurately for this situation. stay away from the cutting torch.

heh heh Kintore said Lube!

Well I am in the same boat as all of you and I've already mushroomed the tip and used heat and a BFH and it won't budge. I guess it is time to cut it out and start new. Where are the safest places to cut it because it is completely free on one end and sloppy but the other end is completely seized up.

Is the r different than, say the sx?

I just got the 85sx swing loose yesterday.
Scared to death, NO special tool but DID find a 30 and 24 mm honda 90 clutch wrench for 10 bucks at beatrice cycle that may fit, but couldn't wait and smashed the locknut with a blunt drift and 5 lb hammer.

boiled some pb blaster in there with a torch a few times and after 10 clean hits in 1/2 hr it spun off.

17mm bolt head played the part of an allen wrench.

If thr r and sx are different, the freak show and subsequent headtrips have to be similar..frame and swingarm destruction are distinct possibilities.

Now to get the races out....no place to hook 'em.

waterproof boat trailer wheelbearing grease and some zirks should buy us what? another 25 years?

I find that a larger sized (deep) socket (like 1 1/4 or so) over the head of the bolt works great. Bolt head and flange fits loosely down into socket. I get em all out fast now. Tip tryke over on its side with pivot bolt head facing down. Put larger socket (modified if ya want no frame marks/damage) in place use HD 1/2 in extension down to concrete floor with a 1/4 in metal plate over thin wood on floor, stack it all up good and BAM! Its moving out already. Seems the frame acts like a "spring" otherwise. It spreads and flexes back with every hit.

Ok, this was the newest thread on stuck swing arm bolts I could find. I figure better to post on an oldie than start another...

After finally being driven crazy by that annoying suspension squeak on my 85 250r, I got the new parts to replace the swing arm pivot bearings/bushing. After going at it with pb blaster and a 2.5lb sledge for two days, I called in reinforcements. This is when I love having a professional auto repair shop at my disposal. We went at it again with the sledge, this time using the impact gun on the other side at the same time. I had already pulled the engine and was planning to put hit the pivot bolt with the torch but decided to cut to the chase, save some headache and just cut the bolt.

One hour, one cut off wheel, a couple cheap drill bits later, it was free. There was no way that it was going to come apart in one piece, the bolt was just too corroded. I was able to save the center motor mount piece though.

Sure I call the 350x :p

No actually, if I get the chance, I want to start cleaning stuff off with the pressure washer. and get things ready to go back together. I got the old races pressed out today so after cleaning, I'll be ready to re-assemble. other than a bolt but I have a trick up my sleeve for that one.
