I recently bought a 1985 200x for $175. It's pretty beat, but does run. It smokes a lot and spews some oil from the pipe. Could the problem be just the rings, or do you think a top end rebuild is in order? If it could just be the rings, where do you get them and how can I tell if the piston is stock size or over bore?

If it's that bad I'd do the whole top end. You've got to remember that these machines are really getting old.

If it were me I would rebuild the top end since you're already going to have it apart. I guess you won't know the condition of things until you open it up.
I bought my 200x and it was doing the same as yours is now, and it ended up having broken piston (still ran though!). I put in a new oversized piston, valve seals, timing set and oil pump just for good measure lol.

and as for getting the rings, or any of the parts for the top end depending on what you do, either go to your local honda atv dealer or look around online, try ChaparrralMotorsports.com to start and go from there
