View Full Version : Couple 85/86 250R Questions...
What exactly is the difference between the 85 & 86 ATC 250R rear ends?
I do know that the carriers are different. Are the axles, axle bearings & swingarms different too? If so, how are they different?
I've also heard the headlight plastic is somewhat different, like the 86 & 87 KXT is just a little different. Is this true also? I guess what you can get from Maier is the 85 style?
And any other differences between 85 & 86 besides fork internal and engine color?
Thanks! :-D

on the rear..these are different. swinger, axle, brake mount, carrier, sprocket. the brake caliper is the same.
the headlights are different. the frames are a little different. the seats are different and the plastic is made of a different compound.
there was a good post about the differences a few weeks back that may help out some more.

Thanks Chris!
I remember that post, I'll go find it.
I searched on ebay and figured out the headlight difference. my headlight is 85. My rear end is 85. Motor center cases are gun-metal grey 86 color. i'll try to figure out what the frame is.

show me a pic of the fuel tank mounts on the frame. the 86 is skinny and the 85 is fat. it is a dead give away.

THE FASTEST WAY TO TELL IS THE TAILLIGHT BRACKETS,,, 85 are welded to the frame ,,,, 86 are bolted on,,,
Thanks guys! 85 it is! Gas tank mounts are wide and the tail light bracket is welded on. Basically my "86" so far has turned out to be an 85 with 86 center cases!
This brings me to two other quesitons. are the rear mastercylinders different between the two years? Is the way the clutch is actuated different between the 86-89 motors and the 85? I noticed on a schematic from bikebandit that it has what looks like two different ways the rod that comes through the motor pushes on the pressure plate.

The clutch update was on trx's only,,, 85-86 atc's were the same,,,, rear mastercylinder, hose and caliper are all the same on the 85- 86,, the caliper bracket was updated in 86 along with the carrier ,,,,
Thanks!
That brings me to another question. The rear master cylinder I have, the bolt holes do not line up with the holes in the frame. That are above the rear brake. I guess it's safe to say my master cylinder is not the right one. Or is there some bracket I am missing? It seems to fit everywhere else ok. It's just the holes in the cylinder are too close together.
