I have a 1985 big red that my grandfather bought brand new in 86. It has been taken care of really well. Anytime it needed work he would take it to the local honda dealer. It is now my three wheeler and I am trying to get it running and looking like it is brand new. The big problem that I am having is that when it is in nuetral, it will start to idol at a really high RPM. It is so bad that if you do not hold the breaks in it will almost stand straight up on you when you go to put it into gear. Is this because the clutch is starting to go bad or is it another reason.

check the idle screw, maybe it is set too high, its on the right side of the carb and you can get at it with your hand. Do it idle normal and then climb up to high RPM's? or is it just constantly high?

when you first start it, it will start out low and then progressively ideal higher. But if it has been running awhile, and you put it in nuetral it will already be idoling high

On the 85 Bigred I have, and have had in the past, the choke will cause it to rev higher as the engine warms.
If the machine is warmed up all the way and I slide the choke lever over (as if choking it), it will rev to the moon.
So perhaps the "fuel enrichment valve" as it is correctly called is not seating its self, down at the carb.
from what you are describing, that would be what I would look very close at .

I have to agree with jeswinehart... My 85 BR does the same thing. Once warm, run and idles fine... I would order a carb kit on go through and clean it up a bit...

you are going to burn your clutch up if you are putting it in gear at high RPM and then using the brakes to hold it in place. you may tear something up just by forcing it to go from neutral to first at high RPM. you have probably got a clogged pilot jet. when the pilot jet gets clogged, there is always some rocket scientist who turns the idle way up to compensate for the lack of pilot jet fuel flow, thus your erratic (high) idle

Caution on the carb kits... Got a defective kit from dennis kirk on my first rebuild on my BR... Had a 180 pilot instead of the 45 it needs... (didnt realize that till after I reinstalled the carb! DOH)

If I am not mistaken, the carb "kits" don't have anything in them relating to the fuel enrichment device on the carb.
I am not sure why Honda chose used that type of choke, absolutely nothing wrong with the old butterfly lever set up.

typical syptoms of an air leak or running lean i'll bet the rubber boots going to the carb have cracked over time

ill agree with daniel, of course check the idle screw and choke first, but this will also do it, normally on 2 strokes but this may be your problem

I will check those... When I took the carb apart it was pretty well clogged up with rust. I am needing to fix the gas tank rust problem as well.
