View Full Version : Looking at 250 Big Red (250es?)... bad kickstarter, should I pass on it?

Well the 185S seems to have become a hit with the family.... enough that I may need a stable mate :naughty:

So looking again in the bargain basement, and I've found a 250 Big Red (still waiting on seller to confirm model year). He wants $300. Oh, he does have the registration, so that's a bit of a bonus.

Onto the known problems: Electric start non-functional, Kickstart is gone.. guy says Kicker Bearings. And it's burning a little oil.. he figures rings are due soon.

I've read the thread on the 250sx/es Kickstart one-way bearing issue... it's an oldie. What's the scoop on parts availability these days? Any quick way to check the Stator for damage from gear bits having made their way down (I'm sure he's NOT gonna let me do a big tear down in his yard :D)

Thoughts from the wise?

Thnx, Getmoresoon

Dunno if I qualify as "the wise", but if it's in otherwise good condition, I'd buy it. Wait a second...as I was typing I just realized you probably can't start it at all, can you?

if there is a battery in there press the starter button and give the starter a few taps with a rubber mallet

Yep Frankencelery, not startable... at least what the guy says. I have enough batteries in my equipment to drag one along tho... I may give the "tap the starter with a mallet" idea a go..... of course there could be other electrical reasons why his electric start isn't workin.. haven't seen other than Kijij pic yet.

I'm more concerned that the starter assembly parts might be discontinued and hard to find now? Thought I saw a thread that was pointing that way....

Well I had a buddy of mine replace the one way bearing because this is what alot of people think is wrong. But on another old thread it seems to be the smaller kick start spring. My tecate is getting a bad kicker now. Also trx 250s the old ones use the same motor and ele starters. Good luck fellow maritimer.

Dunno, you have to be able to run it to listen for the telltale sound that tells you it's the one-way bearing. Without being able to start it, you should assume the worst, and offer only what you think you can get out of it in parts if it comes to that. Might be too late now and it's been sold. Somehow I lost track of this thread. Sorry about that.

For better or worse.. the bike was indeed already sold.. dude's just really bad at removing his Kijiji ads.

Back to hunting the bargain bin!
