Hi, I want to convert my Honda 200ES Big Red ignition to a magneto independant of the battery system. Does anyone know if there is a kit to make this conversion. Also, I want to convert the throttle from thumb lever to twist grip. Anyone have a source for this conversion? Thanks for any help you can be.

Welcome to the boards. The 200es is already a magneto ignition. It will run with no battery but the lighting will dim at idle. As far as a twist throttle check Motion Pro.

Thanks for your reply. As I understand the repair manual I have it says the ignition (impulse generator) requires voltage from the to work. If this is not true can you explain how the ignition system works and how to troubleshoot it? Thanks.

Ignition system troubleshooting starts on page 15-1 of the shop manual.

Thanks for your reply and for the e-manual. As I said earliar it appears to me the ignition system is dependant on the battery/charging system in that it requires an exciter from the alternator to tirgger the impulse generator so it doesn't appear it is a true magneto. Is there a way or a conversion kit I can use to simplify the ignition system and do away with the battery completely? Thanks for the addtional help anyone can give.

I have ran my 200es without a battery and it works fine.

Thanks for the info. As I continue to study it looks like the ignition gets a 12V DC exciter from the ignition coil of the stator which would enable it to run without the battery. Is there any way to get the ignition to work without getting that 12V exciter form the stator or any other 12V source?

why would you want to do this?

To simplify the system it takes to just make the engine run.

mines pretty simple man. ive never had a battery in mine. ran all the time off the pull, lights dim though on idle. at least mine ran awesome before my ignition/CDI went gonzo.....

welcome aboard neighbor- are you trying to get it going for the first time? no need for battery needed like they said. whats the reason to simplify? wire damage? try to be more clear.:wondering
