Well as most of you might know I have redone a Tecate from the ground up and its been 14 years on this build and 4 tanks of gas through her so far. The last thing needed was a stator flywheel and after dragging her to Brapps last year and it sputtering right off the trailer I was pretty bummed. When I got back I bought the stator and flywheel and had it installed in the spring. I got about 20 minutes of ride time on her and she was running good. Was clocking her with my motorcycle at 73 mph when she just quit. I checked it out for a bit and then got disgusted and dumped it in the barn as punishment for treating me so bad.
Well its Ice racing time so I pulled her out and started looking into it. Took the case off and noticed the flywheel just free spinning and I could see loose wires in there. Got the flywheel off and the whole stator was wadded up and the flywheel was chipped and broke up on the inside. I called Ricky and they said they would replace it if it was their fault. It looks like the screws backed out of the coils and just ruined everything. I wish I had a camera so you could see this mess. I guess im lucky it didnt ruin my motor. Gonna go out and freeze today to undo the wiring harness and get this shipped back to them. I was looking to be on the ice next weekend but I dont think I will get it back by then. I would like to get to Rafffas and put some gas through her. I got 3 days of ice time on her before I got the proper sprockets and all that so I have no idea how she will run when ready. Lets hope to see her at Raffas running strong and hanging with the guys. (Could use some setup help when there) Its getting to the point that I just am getting tired of the old girl acting up, at times I wish I bought a Honda but I do love the green machine. If she gives me more trouble it will be time to get that 85 Tri-Z out of that horse barn I been looking at for the last 15 years. Can a brother just have an extra $800 damn Im poor and it sux. If I cant afford it by summer I will give out the number to whoever wants a complete "Barn Dirty" Tri-Z Rather see it go to someone here than some person who might just abuse it and destroy it.

That sucks man I know and feel your pain. Mine shelled out at trikefest last year and left me high and dry. It's annoying to take a trike somewhere just to have your stator fail.

Dammit!

Isn't the KX stator/flywheel the way to go with Tecates? I know you lose your headlight but from what I remember, it's a completely different design without the shortcomings.

Your right but that stuff is hard to find and afford. Ricky offers a cheap solution however they can and will let you down when you need them most.

Very sorry to hear of your troubles Gary.
But how did the Ricky fly wheel get messed up, they are pretty much encased in that heavy arse ring of steel ?
If I am reading right you have one of thier fly wheels too right ?
I thought they loc-tited thier screws that hold the coils in ?

MeatBox, just curious as to the first thing you noticed that the "flywheel was just free spinning" was that freespinning on the crankshaft? What was causing it to free spin? Did it shear the flywheel key or did the rivets holding the flywheel onto the hub break loose? When you installed the flywheel did you use a new key and bolt with correct factory torque specs? I've found the Ricky flywheel to be a good piece with the sealed ring design, the stators however just will give out for no apparent reason. A picture of the carnage would tell alot.

The most reliable aftermarket setup I have found and still be able to run lights is to use to use the stock Tecate baseplate stator and use Electrex brand source coils along with a Ricky flywheel. Basically you are just rebuilding your stock tecate stator yourself instead of buying the stator assembly from Ricky.

If lights aren't a issue the KX setup is the way to go.

I have yet to have a problem on my Ricky setup. I'm probably going on three years with it.

I know of 2 ricky stators that have just crapped out. I have heard that you can use the stock stator plate and solder ricky coils on it. Kinda what 3razors already said. Those kx ignitions are hard to get. Seems like the kx250 dirt bike that has the swapable ignition system is a popular bike. I know I have seen a few kx's for sale local but they always sell fast like in a day or two.
Stinkin stator I truly believe that if the stators were better the tecates would be more prevalent and have more aftermarket parts.

It sucks when stuff like this breaks after you have things all fixed up and ready to ride. I would say keep the green machine and get it running right, your almost there. Honda's have their troubles too. I spent a year fixing my 200x, rebuilt motor, race cam, 10.25:1 piston all the good stuff that comes with a lot of work and $ to have a rod fail and wipe everything from center case halves, to crank, rod, piston, and cylinder out. I was mad when it happened but that gave me reason to rebuild with better parts, and get that Powroll stroker crank I wanted from the beginning. So another winter tore apart for rebuild the 200x will be back and about as badass as you can get for this day in age.
Good luck dude!

I bought the puller and tried to get the old setup off but didnt know the strap wrench trick to hold the flywheel, so I took it to the dealer up the road from my house because I just wanted to ride. Got it back and rode it home on the trails from the dealer. Had my buddy take it on the road as I paced him on my Bike and thats when it died. The inner "case" of the flywheel where it rolls over to the face is all peeled up and broke and the stator is all wadded up.
The flywheel wouldnt come off no matter what we did so I took it to there dealer. They had a real hard time getting it off and its discolored where the flywheel goes on the shaft. Gonna send it all back on Monday and hope theres nothing wrong with the motor.
