i just picked up an 85 sx, pretty good deal, post some pics latenight, after work. Only had time to snatch it up and give it a quick once over before work. It definately needs swingarm bearings, there is so much slop, i dont even know if theres any bearings left in there. Never had to change these on my ES, so i was just wondering how hard they are to change. The bearings are actually in the frame not the swinger correct? can they be changed without any special tools? Also wondering if any other rims will bolt right up to the sx hubs, 350x, 200s ect? It has a good bead leak in one tire, and the rims are kinda crappy looking. other than that it seems pretty good, a few cables and some pads and it should be quite solid.

the sx uses the same 4x110 bolt pattern that most hondas share, however, the right rear rim needs a big bell inside, to clear the brake drum. the front uses the same big bell as the rear, again to clear the front brake drum.

heres some pics of the sx. Paid 375.00 for it, runs good, everything works, tank is almost perfect inside, outside has a few dents, front fender has a few cracks rears are solid other than the holes for a rack at one time. one rear leaks at the bead. i Ordered the bearings for the swinger, hopefully i can get it off without much trouble. only other thingI noticed just now, i pulled the dipstick, and it seemed like there was gas in the oil, atleast it seemed thin, and had a gassy smell, what would cause this. I picked this up to take to Brapps, but i dont think i will get the swinger bearings replaced by then.

Stuck float without the petcock or cap turned off?
i did notice the petcock only seems to work on reserve. I will drain and replace all fluids, and clean the carb anyway, hopefully that will take care of things. anyone change these swinger bearings? any advice? thanks mike, i happened to have already had the manual for this, picked it up awhile back on ebay cause it was dirt cheap. new id have one eventually!!Lol. thanks again for your swift action though. need a battery brcket, and some usuable rear pads if you got them!!

The bearings shouldn't be too bad. They are tapered roller bearings so you can change the bearing and the race and not have to worry about chewed up surfaces. I usually carefully use a punch to back off the locking collar and then you need a 17mm allen wrench to remove the pins. In a pinch you can use a bolt with a 17mm head and lock 2 nuts together on the threads then use a wrench to turn it. I used that method a couple of times then got fed up and bought the proper allen wrench. I want to say it was only $10-12. Make sure you check the manual when you do the job because I'm pretty sure the bearings are supposed to be slightly preloaded.

can the gas smell in the oil mean that the rings are bad and gas is passing into the crank case oil? i heared if ya keep the oil in there and it gets too bad it can cause the whole motor to blow?

not sure if this is right or not it's all just somthing i heared from a cousin, i'm still a newbe to this.

the rings could be slightly worn and when he machine is off it leaks past. have a look at the crank case breather check for blow by
