Ok guys, when I was 14, my dad bought me a brand new 1986 200x. I sold it 3 years later when I got my driver's license and he bought me a Z-28 Camaro. So a buddy of mine that I used to ride with has been sending me ebay and craigslist listings for the last few years. I finally came across one that was clean, affordable, and too good to pass up. So after a year of recapturing my early 80's youth by buying a ton of BMX bikes, I bought my mid 80's love -a 1986 ATC 200x!
So here is a pic and a list of concerns/questions......
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z236/burbzx9r/200x.jpg
sorry for the poor quality pic. blackberry curves suck!
first, i cant get any pressure in the front brake. how do i know if the master cyllinder is shot? what other front brakes will work with that brake line? i might just look for a new front brake with lever because one of the super cool previous-owners bent the front lever on purpose and i hate it. if i could get it working, i might just buy a lever though.
secondly, i need a new tank so any suggestions on that will be great, otherwise i will have to bondo mine and pay to have it painted. as far as tanks go, has anyone successfully mated a 250r tank and shrouds to a 200x?
thirdly, i need some 300 or 400 ex hubs. if anyone has some, hit me up. the stock rims had a crack in one and the tires were 20". my bike as a kid had 18" goodyear soft tracs, so i wanted 18's. a client of mine has a ltr450 and he GAVE me the brand new stock D.I.D. rims and tires that happen to be dunlop 18's.
forth, any suggestion on a new clutch lever WITH perch that would use the stock cable? that giant one with parking brake feature sucks.
fifth, does anyone sell those suction cups for the bottom of the seat to help hold it in contact with the tank?
lastly (for now), my rear suspension is not returning quickly enough. do i need to have the shock recharged or is there some settings i can play with?
sorry for all the questions. i am sure there will be more. the bike starts on the first kick, runs great, and i absolutely killed the guy i bought it from. he bought a new car that needed to go in his one car garage. the car was getting delivered the day after he listed the 200x. i got there the same night he listed it. I got the bike for $650 and all it really needs is a tank job. the plastics are in AWESOME shape and the bike looks excellent for a 24 year old machine!

sweet score! someone hear can hook you up with a service manual. could be a # of things with the breaks, first would be to check fluid, then pads......
the seat seperation is a common problem. Not sure if there is really a remedy for it.

looks good to me, I wish I could find one for that price out here. Anyway, I agree, you sound very mechanically iniclined. You will benefit greatly from the manual

remove the brake line at the bottom and put it in a cup of fluid, then pump the brakes and you'll see if the master is working or not.

In this event, will it actually build pressure, or will it just move fluid? I was able to add some fluid and move lever until i got fluid coming out at bottom. i did it a few times. each time i pumped lever 10 times, then held it to the bar as i cracked bleeder. after a few times, i did get fluid to come out, but no pressure at the lever. ?????? thanks for the help guys, as you can see by the pic, i have a 2003 R1, and i am definitely no "wrench retard". It is just nice to spend 2 minutes on here to save me 20 in the garage!
Thanks for all the help fellas!

Also, will a 400ex, or a 450r master cylinder work with the 200x brake line? is the fitting at the top the same?

trx hubs will do you no good. the 86 and 87 200x's had the same offsent hubs as the quads today.
you either need some billet wheel spacers on ebay about 65 for a set or an extended axle or offsent wheels.
as far the the front lever issue, i dont even used old stuff anymore i always swap out for new quad stuff like 300ex complete master cylinders and levers.

Oldskool, there are tons of guys on here that are saying the new quad hubs give them a couple extra inches at the rear? are you saying this is completely false and it will look and perform exactly the same? i am only trying to pick up a couple inches. i could have sworn i read on here many times that the new hubs from 300 or 400 ex make it wider. ????
also sorry for the double post about the brake -i put a separate thread up about that for guys that might not be reading this one. kind of a different subject with the 450r anyway.

no 86 and 87 200x has the same hubs as 87-92 250x, 93-10 300ex, 99-10 400ex.
it was the older gen 200's that it gave .75" per side. but yours are already offset unless someone swaped older hubs on it. throw up a pic and ill comfirm it.

That's a sweet 2nd gen. I wish I would have found one like this instead of sticking a bunch of money into my first gen.
Does it rev out with those 18's on the rear? Those are pretty small.

looks like you have 400ex tires and wheels on the back of it already...pic up a set of these billet wheel spacers...they are solid. 1.75" per side and i think he makes 1.5 and 1" also per side.

I test drove it the night i bought it. it had 20's on it. i have not ridden it with the 18's on it yet. i am debating whether to drive a little over an hour for these hubs. i can get the hubs and front brake lever and master cylinder off a 2006 450r for $60! i guess if the hubs dont give me the added width i am looking for, i can sell them on ebay and will end up with the brake for free. oldskool83 tells me i wont get any added width out of them, but i am reading varying accounts on here about it.
as for the tires, my 86 in high school had nothing but a slip on (believe it or not, a richter 2 stroke slip cannister), a drilled air box, and the 18" tires. it would do over 60mph and was faster than any other 86 in town -even top end. i am anxious to see how this one performs. i want to get the front brake situated first though!

i keep telling you the hubs add width on the 83-85 200x's the hubs were like the 250r's flat. just look on ebay, your going to find out they are the same. check bikebandit.com also. but i konw cuz i owned a set and put them on my 85 200x what did add width, it wont on 86-87.
throw a pic up of your hubs like i ask, tell tell u what u have.

250R tank wont work.
Fix the old one.
Take the master apart, there is most likely some minor corrosion in there blocking a small orifice.
Motion pro sells an easy pull clutch lever cheap.
You need a parking brake eliminator kit to remove that extra handle. That mounts to the rear caliper.

or a clutch perch of a dirtbike will elimiante it like a CR set up.

One thing I do when bleeding brakes is run a piece of tubing from the bleeder to the master cylinder.Takes alot of fluid but usually does the trick.Pump it until you have a good flow and them close bleeder off.Sort of works like bench bleeding a master cylinder.

Thanks for the call oldskool83. turns out, i finally got pressure in the lever about 30 seconds later! by the way, here is a pic of the hubs. 450r on the left, 200x on the right. i picked up a total of 1.5" in width, plus installed the 450r master cylinder and lever, as well as the CR style clutch perch and lever. i'll put pics up soon. i think the next thing will be to have the tank restored. i am going to read the syko thread after this post.

those hubs you had on your 200x look to be the 1st gen 200ex hubs cuz 86/87 hubs are alot different. glad we figured it out and gained width.

i cant imagine why someone would have put first gen hubs on this thing unless it was to narrow it for tight trails or out of necessity. i will measure the old ones before i ebay them. i might just make a single auction with all my take-offs. maybe it will help someone out. i never spent any time trying to bleed the original master cylinder so it may be fine. i also have the hubs, axle nuts, lug nuts, clutch lever and perch, as well as the parking brake cable. i may have some more stuff. if i ebay that stuff i will put a notice on here or give you guys first dibs at it before ebay.

this is what 86/87 200x hubs looks like vs 83-85. not sure why somone put older hubs on it...maybe thats all they had at the time. notice the difference.

Most likely you have an 83-85 200X axle and hubs installed in there..... They fit and if thats what your old hubs look like, they are def. not 86/87 hubs..... Not 300EX either.
Looks like you have the wrong axle in your machine but it works!! so who cares.............
